Looking a bit too far into the future…..

From Red Giant to White Dwarf could add that the outer layers get blown off (forming a planetary nebula) and core condenses to become a white dwarf.

The transition from Red Giant to White Dwarf, as I understand it is sudden. The resulting shockwave would be what destroys the remainder of the Solar System. Everything else though was fairly accurate. And who knows, my books might be outdated.

As the sun uses up its hydrogen to make helium it is losing mass. As time goes on, the pull of the sun on the planets is becoming less not more, thus the planets will slowly move away from the sun. Mercury and Venus will be consumed by the red giant phase, but what happens to the Earth will depend on how much mass still remains. The larger the sun gets the cooler it gets. It may be possible that the earth will orbit inside the star before either evaporating a way or spiraling into the core.
