“Funny… you don’t look Irish.” (Alvin chatting with Dave in the Chimpmunks’ “My Wild Irish Rose” recording.)

wellllll good luck with the accent (which probably would sound more Cockney rather than Irish shrug)

Last week, I mentioned that a UK comic called Shiver and Shake had the first issue publication date of 10 March 1973. I mentioned some of its characters including Sweeney Toddler and someone replied to me, “Sweeney Toddler sounds a right cut-up”.

A similar character to Sweeney Toddler was a baby-faced, baby-sized bandit called Baby Face Finlayson in The Beano. He originally appeared as the enemy of a Native American boy called Little Plum. The first two issues of The Beano which my Dad helped me to read as a five year old in 1972 had a two-part story featuring Little Plum against Baby Face. I was a little disappointed to learn that Baby Face didn’t always appear in Little Plum but he soon got his own weekly strip in The Beano and he and Little Plum continued to appear in each other’s strips on rare occasions. Little Plum was drawn from 1953 to 1962 by Leo Baxendale who would create Sweeney Toddler in 1973 and continue drawing the strip until his retirement in 1975.

Mostly Irish here. Mother’s grandparents came over on a boat from Northern Ireland and I know a good deal of the history from then till today. Dad’s side is a bit cloudy as far as his ethnicity, but the first James’ came over with the pilgrims around the same time as Roger Williams, the founder of Providence in Rhode Island. Happy St. Pattys Day to you all!

I am Irish but take a low profile on St. Pats. I am too close to the ethic stereotypes. But, let folks enjoy the day as they choose.

St. Patrick’s Day used to be a day the Irish reserved to humbly remember their patron saint. It was a Holy Day of Obligation, you went to Mass, & the pubs were all closed.

I understand that now it’s more like what they do in New York, Boston, & Chicago?

If I’m Irish I have no clue. I never met my biological parents. I could have my lineage checked but why open up a can of worms, even Irish ones? ㋡

I’m late to the commentary today – not because I was out wearin’ o’ the green and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day but because my oldest Ecuadoran grandson graduated from high school this morning and the day has been devoted to that and to a family feast after the ceremony. But I did have my Irish flag pin on my shirt.

I hope all my fellow Cappers – those who are Irish and those who’d like to be – had a wonderful day. Lá Fhéile Pádraig Shona Dhuit!

As a kid, when asked my nationality, I always said " I’m Irish to the word go, and proud of it! ". Actually, I’m 1/2 Northern Irish, 1/4 Irish American, and 1/4 Native American ( But my Arapaho grandmother had been baptized as a child by some itinerant Jesuit and given an Irish name and surname. )
