Reminds me of the joke where a young Hasid tells his rabbi “I dreamed that 300 Hasidim made me their leader” to which the rabbi replies “When 300 Hasidim have the same dream, get back to me.”
When my mum’s aunt died we found a half a bread bag of old coins under the rug. Liberty dimes, WWI steel nickels, solid silver quarters. Hubby, who was a banker, told Mum not to do anything until he had a chance to look at them.
Mum rolled them and put them in her church’s collection plate.
Aunt Clara literally never in her life bent over to pick up anything. She grew up with household help, and when she was married they had a maid. After Uncle Al died, if she dropped something, she simply kicked it under the rug. money, newspapers, used tissues, a small book. . .
I have imagined a future meeting of G8 leaders, all coming together with long faces over their respective countries’ debts. Then one of them brightens as he realizes the power is all in their hands… Year of Jubilee!
Unless you’re a drug dealer, human trafficker, pornographer, etc., OR live in a very economically unstable region of the world, and actually use it for paying for stuff or accepting payment, “bitcoin” is nothing more than a form of speculation for a certain type of gamblers. Buying company stocks is somewhat like that too— but with the big difference being, stocks actually have something underlying them— some value in the company that issues them.

Sounds about like Bitcoin. At least Arlo has something of solid value in his hands, that is not totally virtual.

And if there happen to be 2,000 pennies in there, so much the better.

I agree, all of my pennies should be worth 20 bucks to someone.
Oh, wait. Does that mean I have to pay capital gains?

A penny is worth $20? OK, that will be $4000 for a bottle of Coke, then.

The value of a piece of money is determined by gov’t fiat so Arlo isn’t wrong

Actually, Arlo has it exactly correct; a piece of green&gray paper is worth whatever is printed on it, only because we agree to that.

I really appreciate this comic today. The alternative currency fad is to me, very frightening and destabilizing.

I have hundreds of things that are worth millions of dollars. Now to find someone who will give me millions of “dollars” for them and not pennies.
