OK, smarty… now do it without a running (and jumping) start, and with a hammer that doesn’t weigh 5 pounds. I know plenty of guys (myself included) who can do that with a 3 1/2" spike and a 22oz framing hammer.
The bell ringer is the one midway attraction I am good at. The trick is to start by holding the hammer out in front of you about face high, let it fall past your leg and start put power into it as you lift it up and around, focusing as it comes down and letting it just fall the last couple inches… it jars your whole body if you are still applying force as it hits. I learned the technique while digging up our back yard in Phoenix with a pick so I could put in a lawn. It was that lovely soil known as caliche… not quite as hard as cement but just raising the pick and bringing it down would only penetrate 1-2 inches.
So, since this is a Stone Age comic strip, we know that the hammer head is made of stone, but what about the nail? It has a head, so it it is not just a random splinter of wood or a sliver of stone. Did they take the time to carve a wooden nail, or chisel out a stone nail? It makes you go, “Hmmmmmmm….”

He has a hammer. If he had a bell, and a song to sing all over this world, he’d… you know.
