Still one of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes cartoons. It perfectly illustrates the dichotomy between Calvin’s reality, and the reality the rest of us are stuck with.
My parents barely let me have one of those horns with the rubber bulb. And that was for a bicycle. A siren would have been SO COOL !!
What I dream about these days is a vehicle with a million-lumen light bank mounted so I can point it at the extra tall truck behind me whose low beams are super bright and aimed right at my mirrors.
Little do you know Susie, you will marry Calvin and have kids and grandkids. And when it is time for Calvin to leave us you will bring Hobbs out of the attic so Calvin and give him to that grandkid nobody understands and is always in trouble. And the adventure will continue.
Some gags come closer than others to answering the mystery of Hobbes’ reality.
Yet still there is room for debate. Did Susie see the truth- that Calvin is talking to himself with an inanimate object that only he imagines is alive… or IS Hobbes alive and there’s a spell (for lack of a better word) so that all but Calvin are blind to it?
Assuming Hobbes really is just in Calvin’s imagination; I’d sure like to see those fights through Susie’s eyes – Calvin rolling around with a stuffed animal acting like it’s a fight?
Cutie Susie is most welcome on this part of the tropical world. But then the invitation is extended to Calvin as well! Of course, calvin can do skiing on the fresh water rivers over here.

Unfortunately, Susie only heard one side of that argument.

if Calvin moves to the tropics with Susie, he’ll slip a seaweed or a crab down her bathing suit

I’m surprised Susie and her family haven’t moved to the tropics already.

Now we see what others see when Calvin is interacting with Hobbes.

No snowballs this time, Susie?

If Calvin lived in the tropics he’d probably get his surfboard stuck in a palm tree.

Susie got off unscathed this time. Calvin’s slipping.

I think the sled has a siren. It’s called, “Calvin”.
flemmingo over 4 years ago
We used to sled through the woods. You had to really steer so as not to get killed by an immovable tree.

How does fresh snow help Susie avoid Calvin? By looking for tracks?

German Stuka dive bombers had sirens on them that screamed as the plane dived towards it target.

Maybe Calvin should pick a hill slightly more suited to his sledding skills.

“Let’s get the sled out of the tree and do that again!” – something I hope never to hear in real life.

I don’t think Calvin’s sledding should be complete without introducing paintball guns into it. Paintball guns in snow would be pretty interesting.

This is the only time I’ve seen a third party in-frame when Calvin is talking to Hobbes, in particularly with Hobbes supposedly talking back.
