Blonde woman: Last one, Joe...I promised myself I'd only marry the man who could correctly finish this sentence...The perfect man is...
Ned:...An oxymoron.
Old woman: Well, I heard the food here was good, but I didn't think it'd be THAT good...

No wonder Danae likes Victoria; she’s just Danae all grown up.

In panel 4, the old lady should have said, “I’ll have what she’s having.” (From When Harry met Sally)

The moment it comes to him in panel 2c is priceless.

If it weren’t for the geeky Star Trek reference he fell into, Joe would break that oxymoron.

Joe… you’re doomed. Go on ahead and cut your manhood off with a dull spoon. Then we’ll send a Eunuch to pick it up, maybe he’ll know what to do with it.

I think Joe’s played this game before.

I wonder if they will get married. You never know for sure what will happen in Non Sequitur, I mean look at the name of the comic strip.

Did she really expect a good answer? I love the panel where she realizes …… Wait, no, yes, could it be – HE’S RIGHT!!!

This particular series rises above the commonplace - GENIUS!

Just wondering if the flying hearts in the final panel are from just Victoria or both participants in the scene.
cdward almost 15 years ago
I think the hearts are mutual if strained. Remember that when she walked in and greeted him at the beginning of this arc, he had hearts flying from him – he was in love with her already. The test just might have ruined it, but in this comic, she realizes he is the man for her. What he’ll do is anybody’s guess.

“In panel 4, the old lady should have said, “I’ll have what she’s having.” (From When Harry met Sally)”
Because it’s a famous line from When Harry Met Sally is precisely why I didn’t use it.

Back before the feminists, about four decades ago, the guy made the moves. It was up to him to move the relationship along. Now days the roles are reversed as we see Victoria moving things along. If you have a son of dating age, you are now asking his girlfriend, “Young woman what are your intentions?”

wiley, this has to be one of the best stories, right next to homer. to all the naysayers here, this very tongue-in-cheek portrayal of courting was true brilliance!
I love it, and so does my husband

Clever use of panels and facial expressions and what of the humor! Non Sequitur is one of the best strips around. Congrats, Wiley Miller.

Victoria’s expression in panel 3 could mean so many things - all of them apropos. Hilarious story line, Wiley. Well done!

Bany39- Did you call the editor of the paper to complain? If not, they take your silence as agreement with their decision. As their customer, YOU have far more influence in this matter than I or my syndicate could ever hope to have.

Panel 3 really got to me. Thanks, there is a Santa.

Wiley: Puregenius in not using the obvious line from the movie.
When our localrag dropped your strip, I did protest. Was told majority didn’t like it.

This has been an interesting series - the whole marriage quiz - it’s gotten the readers so fired up! The series with their comments would make for a good teaching/learning experience in any counseling course.
Not to mention the obvious - it’s funny too. Panel 2 is a great way to condense a lot of action into a minimum of space.
I’d give you a standing ovation, but it’s hard to type that way.
poppacapsmokeblower almost 15 years ago
I can’t think of a better way to complete this story line than this. I genuflect in the direction of the author/artist as I type.

Excellent series! If I had thought of these questions before I got married, I know I wouldn’t have - my hubby would never have answered them correctly - and definitely not gotten the Star Trek reference!
Oh, well, live & learn!
Thanks, Wiley, for great stuff!

Wiley, I’m glad you didn’t use that line, because that way it just “occurred” to all who had ever heard it;-)
rowena28 Premium Member almost 15 years ago
This one is worth framing; a great strip everyday, but this is a classic.
But now they need to talk finances. Joe is basically unemployed, so Victoria is going to end up paying 100% of the bills instead of the equitable 50%.

That’s it, Joe…you’re hooked, fileted & fried…

kpduty almost 15 years ago
LOVED it! The facial expressions are priceless! And, thankfully, the notorious salt and pepper shakers (which some folks seem to be fixated upon) were missing when the action started. (oops, just noticed that some kind soul moved them to the senior table…)

I was posting when the timer gave me my lunch and I have been reading in the garden. Post was to the effect that NOT using the famous line gave those of us who knew it the “gotcha” while allowing Wiley to be more clever (and I LOVE the 2nd expression too). I no longer read print newspapers. The grocery ads give me enough absorbent newsprint for my bird perches. I DO buy and read many books although my choices are VERY esoteric, many are already used and I will resell or gift many of them later on;-)

Thanks again Wiley for a wonderful story arc. Joe has so obviously been married before. That is how he knows the correct answers!
DarthSequitur almost 15 years ago
Indeed a true Non Sequitur classic. I also agree that the comments on the whole story arc have been most interesting. I grew up admiring Walt Kelly’s Pogo. While Calvin and Hobbs, Far Side, Bloom County and early Doonesbury have all been worthy entries in the same general vein of humorous treatment of serious subjects IMO, Non Sequitur is the one that makes me stop and think more often than any strip since Pogo. Thanks Wiley for my daily dose of stimulating humor.
Ham_Gravy almost 15 years ago
I can’t help feeling that this whole sequence is a (successful) attempt to get out of creating a courtship continuity :-)

When I called my local editor to complain about the loss of a comic, they told me they couldn’t please everybody. It’s been interesting reading how the guys all squirm from fear of getting their PP whacked by one of those feminists of the last 4 decades. Get over it guys, we’re here to stay and if you’ve survived this long, you’re probably here to stay too. Great comic arc Wiley!!

My boyfriend picked up a newspaper at work the other day and happened to read the cartoon. He laughed and then mailed it to me. His name is Joe and my name is Victoria. Fate? I don’t know, but I sent him a pre-marriage agreement questionnaire. It simply said, “No questions needed. I’ll take you just the way you are!”
michealdark almost 15 years ago
razorback2824 said,
“No wonder Danae likes Victoria; she’s just Danae all grown up.”
I find it funny that she and Kate spent most of ‘08 trying to convinced Joe to marry her when she was just waiting for the time she thought they were both ready to spring it on him herself.
And yeah, she is very much Danae. They’re going to be dangerous together. I see a very playful and competative relationship for them.
