(the three girl are looking at a poster that says "College And Career Fair".)
Bernice: I can't wait to start college!
Delta: I am so ready to begin a career!
Luann: Oooo! A fair!
So can we take it that this is their senior year in high school? That would mean Quill’s coming over in the summer after graduation, which means that Luann will do nothing except moon over Quill for months while her friends are making college plans and moving away. Yikes.
Well, Bernice, maybe in another 25 years you’ll be a couple days closer to going to college. Pittsville is stuck in a time warp where teens go to high school for decades and NEVER NOTICE!!!!!!!!!! Oh, hey! Maybe they’re all dead, and they’re in hell. Or, more likely, limbo. Their relatives are all praying for their souls to move out of the Pitts (work with me, people) and to go on to the higher planes. Which might look very much like Cal U.
Okay, going to bed here. What time zones are everyone else in? I’m in Michigan—new strips post at 1:30 AM or a bit earlier. Good thing I’m a night person!
I don’t see it as Luann not getting it that it is a College Fair. In fact, I’ll bet there’ll be a booth there for the University of Sydney or Melbourne….
So the one with the boobs wants to go to the fair. It’s hard to visualize Luann getting serious about college. However I have to hope Luann doesn’t wind up in beauty college with Tiff.
SOMEBODY needs to go to trade schools before this economy goes to a complete stop. Trade school = beauty school, massage therapy, respratory therapy, and on and on.
Amar, I think it still works. For the kind of career Delta wants, she first has to get a degree (or two or three), so she is just thinking beyond college already. It’s just a stepping stone to her, while perhaps Bernice is looking at the college experience as something enjoyable in itself.
If it has already been decided that Luann is destined for the local community college, that might explain her lack of excitement about other posibilities.
Back to season-zones (Q&L):*Quill said he’d come visit during summer vacation. We thought he meant Northern Hemisphere vacation. But he’d be in school then, so instead would probably come during Southern Hemisphere summer— Dec., Jan., Feb.*Wanna bet he comes to the Pits High Valentines Day Dance?
I remember my first “Career Fair”— I was as naive as Luann, thinking they’d just be handing out jobs.*Sure hope they prep the kids first— helping them know how to dress, what questions to ask, telling them to bring notebooks & pens to record information, practicing interviews & preparing resumes.
Drewder, if you hate the comic so much, why read it?For those of you snarking at Luann’s seeming lack of direction: I’m so old that when I was in school, we didn’t have to decide on a job or career by 6th grade. Now that I’m watching my nieces and nephews work hard learning Chinese and business law and engineering — and STILL not get jobs when they get their Bachelors of Science — I’m not convinced that pushing kids to decide their whole lives before age 14 is helping.
Based on what I’ve seen in the strips since I started reading it, I think Luann wants to be a wife. I mean, think about it: she’s totally boy-crazy as opposed to Bernice and Delta, she’s not focused on school or any activities, and in one strip, when she heard Ms. Phelps go on about the joys of being single, she was acting as though being single was the worst thing in the world. True, she did express wanting to be famous and going to Juilliard, but I think overall, she really wants to be someone girlfriend and eventually, wife.
Granted, Luann is having a Tiffany (or at least airhead) moment here. But to be fair (no pun intended), it’s not like her parents have given her any other university options than Pitts Community College. (She could still explore careers I suppose.) But I do once again wonder why her parents never started a college fund for her, or else did they lose it all when the economy crashed…
Lev – I think most colleges are “a good college” if you have a viable plan when you get there. Luann could graduate from a two year college with a marketable ability – she just needs to pick something in demand and develop the necessary skills. A have an accountant friend who can’t get any decent help. I bet Gunther, for example, would be a good helper while he’s accumulating money to pursue his clothing design dream.
“Pitt Bulls – Full Schedule” is my best guess for the poster on the very left. Pitts High School – Pitt Bulls, ha ha! Let me guess – the football team?
“Years ago, we used to call it “The Twilight Zone”.And the principal is Mr. Serling…”
Creepy thought, but it would explain things. Or maybe they’re all stuck in a variety of chronic hysteresis. Doctor Who must intervene! Bernice can become his newest Companion, and off they will go into the space-time continuum, have wild adventures, and eventually return to 22nd century Earth, where Bernice is dropped off to resume her high school career with her friends, who have advanced by this time to second semester of their senior year…
You’re a Knute fan, aren’t you, Atilla? You wrote a nice post a while back defending Knute, but then you deleted it. I was going to reply and add, “Hear, hear!” I really enjoy Knute. :-)
Sounds like there should be a “Luann” party somewhere. Probably some of the boys & girls making comments would fly to a city – see the town – meet for a drink or two…
>>She has never applied herself to her school work and her grades have suffered due to this.<<
That’s true. I remember the strip where she’s meeting with Ms. Phelps and laments—as usual—about the troubles in her “love life” while Ms. P. wants to focus on her low grades. Luann often dismisses Ms. Phelps as an old, lonely 40-something fogey, but Phelps has a point. You know what? Better to be a 40-something “old fogey” who’s been through life and is content with where she is than a flighty, neurotic 17-year-old who acts as though boys are the be-all and end-all of her existence.
It just occurs to me that if this is the beginning of another arc, maybe this is how Luann gets to Australia—on an externship or overseas study program or something. What she’d qualify for I don’t know. Greg could cut back and forth from her in Australia to the gang in Pittsville. It could take years, and introduce lots of new characters. I don’t see it happening, but it’s a concept.
*
More likely Luann gets blown away by being confronted with everything at the fair and starts worrying in earnest about her future. Bernice and Delta are raving about the possibilities, and Luann starts thinking about…moving to Australia and marrying Quill? I mean, what other options do they have except staying together or breaking up? If they stay together, they either have a long-distance relationship forever (wouldn’t work), or else they agree on where they’re going to live and do that, married or no. This has the potential to be a horrible mess before it’s over.

Did they run the Sunday strip a few days early? (If not, they sure ended the “Luann spies on Gunther and Rosa” story kind of abruptly!) o.0

Does this mean they are, indeed, seniors? Hmmm….

I hope Bernice has been looking for schools prior to spring semester, senior year. Otherwise, hello, Pittsville Community College.

I think it’s time for Luann to somehow go on a trip to Australia. That would be interesting.

This is a great example of why Greg has so many storylines without delta and Bernice. No one cares about the piddily crap that high school girls do.

MedGuy, we have it on good word from the Strip Staff— Luann’s hair is reddish orange, not blonde. Please refer all silly blonde jokes to Tiffany.
