Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for March 10, 2013
Transcript:
Bernice: "I see you turned your clock ahead" Luann: "Yup. Lost an hour" Bernice: "This says an entomologists in New Zealand first proposed daylight saving time in 1895 so he could have more daytime to collect specimens" Luann: "Entomologist? What's that?" Bernice: "Someone who studies insects" Luann: "So zillions of people turn their clocks because some kiwi bug-nut invented daylight savings time?" Bernice: "Did you notice- I say 'daylight saving time,' using 'saving' as an adjective, like 'cost-saving measure.' You say 'savings,' as in 'savings account.' Interesting, huh?" Luann: "Clearly we're not missing the hour"

I reckon much of the cast are changing nowadays. Could be a portent. The biggest potential for change actually is Dirk. I’ve been considering his place in this show lately. Either write him out forever or more likely show that he has truly reformed.

DST is a pointless scam. Give me standard time year-round!

This is why we don’t need to see Bernice…….

We had that for a couple of years in the 1970’s. Was shouted down. My impression was that some of the loudest shouters were parents whose children had to wait for school buses in the dark. That started the string of compromises that led to where we are now. -———————————————-In the 1970s the justification for year-round DST was supposedly energy conservation. but I’ve never seen any studies that demonstrate that this is actually true.

At last, Bernice is not pure kill-joy sarcasm.

As I have been saying, DST needs to be reduced. Back in the many years gone by, it was saving a lot of things, but not anymore. My proposal is have DST begin on the last Sunday in May and then end on the first Sunday in September. Keep in mind this was the G. W. Bush Administration that came up with this idiotic idea to expand DST. My group has come with a more intelligent idea to reduce it!

It may not save anything, but it does mean the sun goes down and comes up later. Since my day starts and ends late, I prefer it like that.

I would rather have longer daylight in the evening not AM. I say turn the clock 1/2 hr and leave it there.

I use to like Bernice but any more she’s just sarcastic and not supportive of her supposedly best friend. And she’s become very boring. Lu needs to find better friends.

Well Yes the amount of light does change depending on how far you are away from the equator ,there is no reason for the nonsense of setting clocks twice a year.
auriel4 over 11 years ago
Hawaii maintains the same time year round too, but that actually makes logical sense, they are tropical and it would be pointless to shift clocks around as they have exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night.
I am all for eliminating daylight savings. I am a parent and never has my kid has to wait for the bus in the dark on standard time. Most kids don’t take the bus anymore any ways, most are children are driven to school.

Europe have DST since the early 70s. A study was published some 15 or 20 years ago showing that yearly energy saved was in the 0,3 percent bracket. What was saved in the evening was mostly spent in the morning at the beginning and the end of DST. In midsummer it was more or less an equilibrium.Apart from the saved energy DST meant an economical increase in expenditure, as dairy cattle spent less milk for at couple of weeks, trafic accidents and work accidents increased heavyly meaning extra spending for hospitals and decreased production. The conclusion of the study was that it does not pay off to go to DST a part of the year. Better would be to either stick to GMT or go permanently for DST making it the new GMT.

I for one love, love DST!

dst doesn’t save energy. farmers hate it. it is an economic stimulus measure.

Arizona is very close to the western edge of the mountain time zone. DST would make mornings really dark as the sun comes up almost an hour later than the eastern edge of the time zone. Eastern Indiana which is in the eastern time zone, same thing.
vldazzle over 11 years ago
DST is silly! We here in AZ just switch time zones (Mountain time now). We also don’t have toll roads YET but some fools who have not lived with them want to have some ;-(

facepalm
obviously the total amount of daylight doesnt change. the issue is WHEN that daylight falls out. instead of having it early in the morning when noone is awake yet, we ‘save’ it for when more people are awake by changing the clocks.

Thomas Jefferson invented DST at least 100 years earlier.

Granted the drive-in movie industry was probably already on shaky ground in the ’60s but DST put the final stake through its heart. Who wanted to wait until 10:00 pm to start seeing the previews of upcoming movies with the feature not starting until 10:30? Get home well after midnight. Might work for young people on dates but families with small children used to like going to the drive-in but those late hours did not work for those with very small children.

It’s silly, but it keeps our politicians occupied so they don’t get around to doing even more “for” us.-That might make it worth having. -And remember, nobody has to accept any form of standard time; it’s just there for our convenience if we wish to use it and 99.874% of us do.

As a real-life Bernice I can say it’s kind of not all it’s cracked up to be.

I gave up changing my clocks to Standard Time years ago. 5 months do not make it ‘standard’ any more. When I was working second shift DST seemed normal. As a matter of fact, were it not for the 6 o’ clock news I’d never notice.

speaking about drive-ins, where i live, i have to drive way out into the boonies. and, the place isn’t that great. gravel lot, speaker issues, less family oriented…more adult. R rated movies, couples going at it, bootleggers copying the movie, and people streaming netflix on their phones while the movie is playing.

I actually noticed Bernice said “saving” (and acknowledged his proper usage), but I didn’t expect Greg Evans to make a joke out of it!

vwdualnomand over 11 years ago
and, dst cost the us economy a billion annually. in lost productivity, etc….
notinksanymore over 6 years ago
I don’t understand how DST makes “more” daylight. The sun is still up for the same amount of time, regardless of what hour the clock says it is. If the man wanted more daylight hours to work in, he should have gotten up an hour earlier, not made life miserable for millions of people for generations to come =P
