Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for April 28, 2013
Transcript:
Mom: "Luann, this was in the dryer. You laundered ONE shirt?" Luann: "Yeah. I needed it" Mom: "But why didn't you pick up the clothes on your floor and do a full load?" Luann: "'Cuz I didn't need them. Geez, mom, I thought you'd be happy I did my own laundry!" Mom: "I'd be happier if you'd do ALL of it and not be wasteful doing ONE item!" Mom: "teenagers" Luann: "mothers"

My mother was a lot older than me when she was my age… and she said the same things I now do. Oh my!

Gotta agree with mom.

when I went home for a visit, brought some laundry to wash. I also did whatever else I can fit from the others in there. My bro on the other hand doesn’t… but at least he’s not washing clothes by singles!

Oh, I’ve seen this one all too often. Well, they don’t have me around, now. I wonder how they like paying thier own way?

It’s inconceivable to me that a 16 year old wouldn’t already be regularly doing laundry — everybody’s laundry — as well as other chores! Has the world really changed so much since I was that age?!?

(cue song:) Bringing you together…. uh, we guess, eventually…. BCCI… using too many words… or not enough…. BCCI… uh, what else can we say? (picture fade, not enough room now for other commercial….)

Mom never explains to daughter why it’s a bad idea to only launder one shirt per load.
JayBluE over 11 years ago
There’s also the communication thing to consider here…. >
1:Luann thinks that what she’s doing is adequate enough, but hasn’t learned the value of what Nancy is trying to convey… ————2:Nancy hadn’t figured out an effective way of seeing what Luann was thinking, or has maybe even forgotten what goes on in someone like Luann’s head at that stage (believe it or not, sometimes we CAN forget what it’s like @ certain stages of life, and maybe in our OWN growing and maturing, we have unlearned what it’s like in a teenager’s head), enough to maybe not find ways to communicate it in a way they can pick up on (no pun intended).———And so, due to the ongoing communications learning curve/generation gap combined, you have both Luann and Nancy just chalking it up to “Mom” being “Mom” (translated: argh!) and "Daughters being Daughters (translated: ugh!) as illustrated in panel 3….

Luann is a boy in a girl’s body. At times, she reminds me of Jeremy in the Zits comic strip (I eventually stopped reading it).
At times, I think I’d rather take Tiffany over Luann. Prissy sexiness>>sloppy, tomboyish selfishness. Somebody enlighten Quill now.

my son pulled that (wash just 1 shirt, 1 pair of jeans) on me when he was 15 and I told him I would not do it and showed him how to use the washer and dryer……..and sat on the washer until he brought all the rest of his dirty clothes in and sorted them into 2 loads. I am not sure I got through to him but I know for a fact now he NEVER EVER does one or two pieces, he does full loads.
hughnsyl over 11 years ago
@jeanie5448 Shoulda sat on the dryer and got your son to throw his sneakers in…..

Life is so complex, and traits sometimes skip generations. I’d love to see a bit of exposition on what mom was like as a 17-year-old. Did she develop her sense of hyper-responsibility as a young girl? Was it forced on her by her parents? Or was she just as slovenly as Luann, and then decided for herself that the prices of sloth outweighed the benefits?

i feel old now only a few years ago i would have been siding with luann but now that i do laundry on a daily basis i have to side with her mom
animemom over 11 years ago
Show her how much water she wasted, and how that effects the bills for heating water & running machine & how that effects environment. Thought kids her age knew that much.
animemom over 11 years ago
Why doesn’t the mom show her how much water & electricity is used when doing a load of laundry. How a girl her age can not be informed of environmental effects is beyond me.
ncalifgirl58 over 11 years ago
The MAIN reason she shouldn’t wash just one shirt is that it is very bad for the machine! Washing machines are expensive these days. You also have to teach them not to overload it because that is very, very bad for it.

I’m a guy and I’ve been washing my own clothes since I was 17; I do tend to wait til I’m down to my painting clothes before I do them, though

nice to see a 4 panel Sunday strip, there was a time that dailies had as many as 6 panels and Sundays took as much as an entire page!

someone REALLY needs to do some sort of action to get Luann to get her ____ together.

My mom made me start doing my own laundry when I left my dirty clothes on the floor. I was five. I still hate doing laundry to this day….lol.
Namrepus over 11 years ago
My brother and I were responsible for our own laundry as soon as we were physically able to do so. It amazes (and saddens) me just how many young people don’t know how to do their own laundry till possibly college. But then, unfortunately there are a LOT of women out there who do most of the housework themselves because they’re control freaks. They want it done THEIR WAY and any other way is wrong, so even if the husband or kids WANT to help- chances are, they’ll get pushed aside, supervised, or criticized for how they did it. By the way, this is Namrepus’ wife. For some reason, I’m not able to log him out and make my own. shakes fist at computer
yangeldf over 11 years ago
wait…is ANYONE out there meant to sympathize with Luann here? She just wasted DOZENS of gallons of water and electricity to clean ONE shirt in a machine meant to clean an entire wardrobe. If she wanted to wash one shirt she should have done it in the sink or a bucket.
Namrepus over 11 years ago
Oh, and I agree that Nancy should’ve explained to Luann WHY doing one item wasn’t good. As is, Luann just sees “Mom” as being unappreciative of what she did and being cranky over nothing.
joemachop over 11 years ago
My wife of 25 years is still doing this. No wonder our college daughter does it too.

…I wonder if wash-a-teria is a regional expression…here “out west” it’s mostly called…a laundro-mat…same ‘game’ with a different name…

My kids started doing their own laundry at 10 or 11 years old, and never asked me to do it for them. They also knew how to adjust the water level in the machine. If anything, they stuffed it too full!

geez and Nancy would have appreciated that Luann did it by herself without mom doing for her but that’s mothers for you eh????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
legaleagle48 over 11 years ago
No, physical violence (or whatever that “_______” is supposed to represent) isn’t the answer, either. Nancy actually had the right idea; she simply used the wrong approach in teaching the lesson. But then again, how do you reason with a self-absorbed teenager who only thinks about what’s convenient for her, not what’s really best for everyone in the long run?
sarafaye over 11 years ago
Luann used to do laundry, including Brad’s.
JayBluE over 11 years ago
I just thought about something else…. she could’ve hand-washed it…. put it on a fan…. providing she wrung it out properly…. if it was a delicate, it would’ve worked out, anyway….
Argy.Bargy2 over 11 years ago
Yep, you’re right, it sounds mean. I still don’t get why so many Luann haters read the comic if they hate the main character. You’d be much happier with Zits, where the main character is a guy.

I read this and I couldn’t help thinking about Tom Bosley thindering at Ron Howard in one of the “Happy Days” episodes after Richie Cunningham pulled some particularly outrageous stunt; “Grounded for LIFE!”While that might not be QUITE the best ‘sentence’ in this case, maybe something similar might do a WORLD of good for our dear strawberry blonde – especially if she ALSO lost cell phone, FaceTime/Skype, and non-schoolwork Internet privileges at the same time, and GAINED laundry training classes…
