Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for August 04, 2013
Transcript:
Goat: My building superintendent is visiting me today. He's that eccentric guy from California who walks around with a female deer. Rat: Is he the guy you call 'Cali'? Goat: Yeah. And it's always scary when the super wants to visit. I fear he's raise my rent. Cali: Hello, Goat. Goat: Oh, hello, Cali. Cali: Bad news, Goat. Your apartment is just too expensive to repair. The fragile thing is falling apart. So I'm gonna have to list it for sale, and you'll need to move out. If you object, you can expect a visit from our lawyer, Allie. Goat: Super Cali...Fragile?...List it?! Deer: Expect Allie. Goat: Doe, shush! Rat: Mary Poppins asked me to kick your @#@.

I saw this pun coming in the first panel, but the payoff was still brilliantly funny. Bravo, Stephan.:Maybe Goat would be in a better mood if he made a little doe.
hariseldon59 over 11 years ago
Donât worry, a spoonful of sugar helps the puns go down.

Sorry, I meant to say clever!
Templo S.U.D. over 11 years ago
Now that was quite atrocious in the second to the last panel.
kamb8 over 11 years ago
Yes, thatâs what those last panels are for. And Iâm pretty sure he doesnât read these comments, so giving him your feedback here isnât going to help.
naturally_easy over 11 years ago
Well, corny or not, it was still impressive that Stephan pulled it off with only four panels for the setup. Good job.
Sisyphos over 11 years ago
Julie Andrews has a penchant for famously salty language. So Iâm sure sheâd be even more explicit than Rat in saying just exactly what Cartoon-Pastis deserves for perpetrating this highly contrived groaner.I, for my part, kinda liked it because it was so well contrivedâŠ.

Doe, a deer, a female deer âŠ
blunebottle over 11 years ago
Reminiscent of an old 1-panel comic which portrayed visual puns (canât remember the name)- a picture went with each part:
Super CowA Fragile ListStickEggsPeaAlleyDoughShush!

milhouse.vh over 11 years ago
Whatâs a super doing visiting the building? Isnât he there every day? And how is he making decisions about raising rent, let alone about selling the place? Since when does a super have such authority?
michaelyukyuk over 11 years ago
Grooooooooaaaaaaaannnnnnn (Labored groan for a labored pun)
jazzmoose over 11 years ago
I could see it coming from the first panel but couldnât look away. Damn you, Pastis!

To paraphrase Kitty Pryde as written by Warren Ellis: âReading these pun strips is like watching train wreck: horrible but strangely fascinating.â _
edclectic over 11 years ago
Maybe too late for Pastis, but we can always take out a restraining order on youâŠ
theorgandude over 11 years ago
Heard Pastis was going to help write a new movie script: âAny Given Pundayâ.

Those train comments reminded me that Ignatzâs great-great-grandnephew has a one-track mindâŠand said track is an abandoned spur!!

EPIC! :)
corzak over 11 years ago
I love the female deer. Brought in by Pastis to represent one word of the pun, and then utter a single two-word line. Whatâs the pay rate for that in cartoon-world, I wonder?

This is classic Pastis. For which I wait and continue to read. Itâs like the story of the long way to tip a rarery.
Defective over 11 years ago
This one was so transparent, it was obvious in the first frame. Really lost its punch.

I salute the master, Stephan Pastis!(bow, scrape)You should make Rat an accomplice in one of these, heâll really love that!

I knew something bad was coming, and ⊠yeah.
On the other hand, this was impressive work by Stephan.
I probably shouldnât encourage him, but I know jokes like this are why I love âPearlsâ.

In the paper version this morning, in the final panel, Mary has two Rs â Marry Poppins. An added dimension to the pun? Nah, just a typo.

Man⊠When I make awful jokes like that, I get smacked. But him? He makes a living off of themâŠ.Iâm obviously in the wrong businessâŠ.

You know, you can say it backwards, which is: Doe shush, Ally expects lipstick from Auntie Cali Rupes.
Gokie5 over 11 years ago
IMO, if you said it backwards, youâd say, âsuoicodilaipxecitsiligarfilacrepus.â
berto162 over 11 years ago
Too bad âLinusâ mag is no longer on sale in Italy. But I wouldnât have liked to be the poor guy being assigned the task of translating this.
steverinoCT over 11 years ago
My print paper spells it âMarry Poppinsâ in the last panel. Someone cheated and corrected it hereâŠ
Of course, that saves a convoluted PeeWee Herman excuse: âI meant to do that!â
