Nancy seems quite content with this plan. Maybe that, rather than Luann’s enthusiasm for it, is what has Frank really worried.

As a father of a daughter I can fully understand why Luann’s father is up at night totally bewildered. My advice is to just to love her, trust her, keep a shotgun (no not really -:), and be a good father ready to be there for his daughter at an instant if necessary. Luann represents a good, well-raised young woman, and Quill is only a threat in that eventually he might be the most important man in her life, but then that is natural as well. Makes me so sentimental.

Perhaps Quill’s parents are loaded (doesn’t matter what their professions are, they could have inherited), and Luann is going to find out she could be marrying into a lot of $$$$. It’s too easy, I know, but it could help explain how Quill can jet around the planet with the greatest of apparent ease.

=And= how Quill could be realistically considering a career in theater. Of course, we’re being told he’s a “rare talent” and all that—but that doesn’t mean he’ll ever get work in acting. The vast majority of aspiring actors never get significant work. If the inlaws aren’t loaded, Luann better sharpen those librarian skills!

I continue to find it troubling that “everything that matters” to Quill is in the US, despite the fact that in Luanntime, he has spent less than a full year in Pittsville.

Does he have no friends in Australia? Has he spent the other 16 years of his life being a complete loser only to blossom in the magical presence of Luann?

I have to admit that, whilst I like the Luann strip and have been reading it for years, there have been times when I’ve had problems with the credibility of the portrayal of her parents – and this is one. Luann’s been obsessing about various boys since forever, and she’s got an older brother who’s been in a steady relationship for some time (and quite possibly an intimate one, although that’s been rather more hinted at than stated, for obvious reasons). And now Brad’s getting married, so Frank can’t exactly be having his first “Oh my God, my kids are growing up and moving on!” moment. Which means that, whilst he undoubtedly does, and will probably always, see Luann to some extent as his “little girl”, it’s not entirely credible that it would take overt evidence that he wouldn’t have noticed or realised that she’s growing up, or what that means.

Fredd, it’s different with boys. We push our boys out in the world and when they finally fly free it’s a feeling of relief.

We guard our little girls. They will forever be our little princesses. When they take flight, we have the terrible worry that in our drive to protect them, we have failed to prepare them for the world.

Mothers are the opposite, thus Nancy is indifferent to the whole Quill thing, she knows Luann can take care of herself, but Toni had to prove herself.

    CHILL, ..

Look, if Your Sister’s BFF or Joel’s Niece found Their Soul Mates on the Very First Try then GOOD for Them and BLESS ‘Em! Most of the Rest of Us HAVE to Go Through a LONG and often PAINFUL Search BEFORE We “Find” the Right Person. Heck, even Luann’s Mom Had over a Dozen Boyfriends BEFORE Marrying Frank.

The “Madness” I’m Referring to is Luann’s. This Weepy, Clingly, Stuff She’s doing. Now its been a Long, LONG time Since I was a Teen, but I remember Some Guys being TURNED off by a Gal that Insisted on being WRAPPED around His Arm 24/7.

One other Thing: If Mr. Perfect looked like Gunther or Ox, would Folk’s Here be so QUICK to wanting Them to be together for the Rest of Their Lives? I DON’T Think so.

^^I can buy that, but, you have to realise, after nearly 30 years, the fact that the strip is still as good as it is, is pretty impressive. Anyway, Greg writes the strip for his fans and paycheck, not for awards.

Luann needs to shop around.Shop around? She’s been acquainted with quite a variety of characters: Aaron, Stuart, Miguel, Bern’s boyfriend, Bern’s brother, TJ, Gunther, Knute, Elwood, Jonah Daytona, Ox, Leslie, Dirk, Quill, the male teacher, Brad & Frank – maybe more. If they don’t represent a thorough crossection of male humanity, you’re gonna have to tell me what you want in a new person. Oh yeah, there was that celebrity that almost killed Puddles with his car – Troy?I didn’t say they were all romantic interests – just that they were acquaintances that reveal the varieties of male entities.

Seems like what you’re doing is called ‘projecting’ — seeing your own bad traits in someone else. In this case, the some one else is a character in a comic. Poor you if you’re so unable to commit to another person.

The occasional suspension of disbelief for the effect of drama and action is one thing, but constantly relying on implausibility due to inability to create interesting situations or characters out of realism is something else.

I agree, I would hate to see Gunther written out, he has made such major strides in his life… I don’t know if he would cut in front of Quill if he sees how close Quill is to Luann…but then, if Quill discovers someone else, Gunther will always be there for her…

“what happens if Rosa head to a college on the east coast, as has been hinted at? Gunther is open once again. He goes with her and is written out, a major loss to the strip, of he goes on the prowl. He has Luann’s scent already.”

And I believe the “hinting” also includes the concept that Gunther cannot follow Rosa to the East Coast (or to Europe to study abroad – the other scenario). Short term… he can’t afford it (although that could be resolved by scholarships – easily obtainable for Gunth)… 2nd (and more problematic), he’s looking after his mother and can’t leave the house.

Again, if one is of the belief that Lu and Gunth were meant for each other, then the appropriate “Deus ex machina” will prevail, eventually. But that might take a while… and if Karen is to take over, eventually, quite a long while…

A while ago, that subject was on a talk radio station, here…. similar to what you’re saying, the point was made about how “relaxed” European standards are, than here… especially in connection with the phenomenon of teenage binge drinking, and abuse… also secondary to that, was the discussion of raising or lowering certain age limits, and the fact that 18= draft, but only 21= legal drinking age here…. discussion was… animated and articulated well…

    Donny? Donny Wallace.

Excuse Me, but I want You to Ponder Something over the Weekend and Beyond. It Doesn’t Require an Answer or a Response. Just Consider this:

Do You Really, REALLY Want to KNOW the WHOLE Truth??

Does Quill have a good, caring father? Because if so, then this plan is going nowhere.

In addition to the opportunities, there was a time when many would leave England and set up residence in the U.S. or some other places in order to avoid certain taxes, there… like how the Beatles and The Stones did….

Points like that were also brought up, as well, how some view other countries to be progressive, or some not….but in some ways, it’s tough comparing one national method to another, as there’s pros and cons to everything in the world…..

Quill is a high school senior. We aren’t talking about someone who is on the verge of a huge movie career. (Starring in a summer camp production of “George” is light years from that. The very best he could hope for is the sort of tiny roles that Tiffany works to get in Hollywood.) There are hundreds of Australians studying acting in Australia right now, and just as many of them will go on to become major stars as will a similar bunch of drama students in the US.

There is no reason to think that coming to high school in a small USA town like Pitt would in any way whatsoever benefit his training beyond what he would receive at home. His parents would be idiots not to see through this scheme, no matter how hard he tries to sell it as “professional development”.

To show how that both sides of this topic of the viability of studying in the U.S. or in a native or other country can be strong and valid, here is some biographical information about a foreign born musician who came to the U.S. to study at Juliard (from Wikipedia): =Jozef Kapustka was born in 1969. He began receiving early musical tuition from local instructor Danuta Cieslik at the age of 3. He then briefly studied at the State Higher Academy of Music in Kraków with Ewa Bukojemska. Having graduated from The Juilliard School in New York (Bachelor of Music degree, 1992; piano with Josef Raieff, then Jerome Lowenthal and chamber music with Joseph Fuchs), he moved on to obtain a Postgraduate Advanced Studies Diploma specializing in piano performance from the Royal Academy of Music in London (1997), with Martin Roscoe. He also worked with Dimitri Bashkirov (masterclasses held under auspices of the Queen Sofía College of Music in Spain)1 and Vera Gornostaeva in Paris and Moscow.2 Being an alumnus of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, 1991, he holds a Diplome superieur de la langue et civilization francaise from Paris Sorbonne University (1994). In 1994 he received a Grand Prix of the Conservatoire International de Musique de Paris.3 He was nominated for the Molière award in 2010 (Best musical play: Diva à Sarcelles, written and directed by Virginie Lemoine)
