Although it’s nice to finally see a reference to Sam’s addictive smoking habit it’s highly improbable that a flip at the speed they were traveling would result in just a damaged cigarette and bad joke! Isn’t it against the law to switch seats with the driver after an accident? Sam must have too many points on his license! Tracy’s a real pal! LOL!! I think a certain previous writer of this strip would have gotten ripped to shreds if he’d done such an obvious goof! Just saying!
During our recent monster snowstorm, my daughter hit a patch of snow, ran up a bank and flipped the car neatly on its top. She was wearing her seatbelt and was completely unhurt. Not a scratch. Not so for the car, but it’s only a thing that can be replaced.
I told her that professional stuntmen went through extensive training to be able to do that.
Good thing Tracy and Sam where wearing their seat belts! Hopefully the air bags went off too. Let this be a lesson to all of us, buckle up when you take the wheel!
SDM – er – Avenger09 beat us all to it – I saw it, too, and thought, wasn’t Sam driving? Or has Tracy-land moved to the UK? (Ah, so! Japan! Right George T?).As for the smoking reference, do Mike and Joe read our comments? Smoke has been getting in the eyes of several readers for quite some time now. (Mine, too).tsull2121: A might surly today? The story’s DOA?.I’ll grant you this much: Sam and Tracy are fine; I had thought (and hoped!) that this would have been used as a cliffhanger of sorts, at least until the great chase was over..In the meantime, I think the Nitrates have pretty much worn out most of their welcome, at least as comic relief criminals. First, the I’d-Walk-Miles-for-Hyena-Chow episode, and now the gratuitous violence when they could have just as easily slipped away and disappeared off the radar screen..I mean, let’s face it, until the bones were found at the theatre, what cause did Tracy and gang have to tail the Nitrates? No money exchanged hands between Vitamin and the Nitrates..And if Sprocket would only wear some shoes, the MCU would have had no clue that the Nitrates left town on the train, let alone whose car they are driving now..Suddenly, the Nitrates just don’t seem all that smart anymore.
I vote yes on artistic license. Usually when we are graced with a two-panel strip, the second panel is 2/3 of the space. This even division of the two panels is unusual and very successful. As Gweedo points out, the first panel offers a great perspective. The art, like the crash, is high impact. The first panel is dramatic, while the second is a bit lighthearted, as we see that Tracy and Sam are uninjured. More of the good stuff from Team Tracy.
I might be wrong here but something to ponder. If Tracy and Sam flipped over to the right Sam would still be in the driver’s seat. but no evidence of a steering wheel.
A friend of mine was was driving on one of our interstates when she was hit from behind by a car that must have been doing 100. She was sent up and over an embankment, rolling over. The car was totaled, but she emerged with only bruised ribs from the seat belt.
Really love panel 1 – the pov, the angles of the embankment and car intersecting, the shadows on the cops, even the blown front tire. Dick Tracy has the best art in daily comics.
More praise for today’s art: the officer coming down the embankment sideways. That’s exactly what you’d do if you had to get down a slippery, icy bank quickly. Joe is very observant.
Oopsie! So, they switched places? Well, the important point is that they survived the rollover with no serious injuries. The goal now is to get back on the chase! We can’t let the Nitrates get away with this!
“Artistic license” or “poetic license!!! Looks like I was correct; most posters gave Mike & Joe a pass on their monumental blunder. ”It’s easy to forgive the ones you love!” LOL!!!

Now, I need a smoke break after such a close call. I am sure there will be a fresh car waiting for them tomorrow.
