Good morning all!Ha ha, I see that Mysta is totally unimpressed by Alldid’s pityful attempt of flattery! I wonder if Dr Sail and Zygote told her of her role in “Sawdust?”
“I’m the world famous cartoonist. Perhaps you’ve never heard of me, and I’ve mistaken you for someone else.” Or something like that. He’s doing his darnedest to look charming, though.
I’m pretty sure that is a holster on her hip. Is she left-handed?
Poor Alldid, try being a boy and go through school with a feminine sounding name, and explaining it would have made the bullies laugh when they punched him! No wonder he’s so damaged!
Vera doesn’t have any luck with the ladies, does he? He divorces Sparkle, embarrasses himself on her front lawn, and now he’s being all “smoothie king” with Mysta. Speaking of, seeing her in costume really makes me want to see a “Moon Maid” feature done. Can we beg Team Tracy to at least make a short cartoon of this?
This is all leading up to a very interesting story. it’s so good to connect with the funny pages of the past. When i was a teen i was madly in love with Thistle Dew…she was a sort of pre-cursor to Moon Maid 1964…She was Hot..the ultimate beatnik chick…
Chimera wasn’t the original Moon Maid’s name, was it? I don’t think she had a last name until she married Junior Tracy. Of course, Vera might assume that it’s a stage name.
“Chimera wasn’t the original Moon Maid’s name, was it?”No. Chimera was the last name Mysta picked for herself at the end of the Mysta-ry last October. It was her way of embracing who she had become:
A Chimera is a unique blend of creatures. The term has come to describe any mythical or fictional animal with parts taken from various animals, or to describe anything perceived as wildly imaginative or implausible. In Mysta’s case, her Lunarian DNA is apparently gaining dominance, possibly colonizing the submissive human traits. A Chimera could take a wide range of forms, depending on its origins.
Mysta sold gags to the creator of “Sawdust.” She was not the sole source of material and did not help draw the strip. There was a team of artists hired for that job:
“Luck with the ladies” depends on luck with your looks…..if Vera was “hot” looking, a “hunk”, Mysta would be all over him……oops, maybe not, this is a comic, not real life, lol…
“If they ever decide to do it as live-action, I’d bet Kate Upton might get the nod to play Mysta.”Kate Upton playing Mysta on the big screen? Perfect!!
Anyways, in the end he’s doomed anyways once she learns who he is…..although I’m thinking he might just want to add her to the Straightedge strip. I’m enjoying it, but this has to be the light heartedest Tracy episode ever…
It’s definitely a holster, but that doesn’t mean it’s a gun. It would mostly be a prop gun, for one thing. And I used to have a holster for my cellphone, and have a holster right now for my Swiss Army Knife.
A chimera is also a case of twins that, at an early stage, merged into one another. One individual, but two sets of DNA, depending on where you look. Sometimes the mixture is clearly visible in the body, but sometimes it isn’t.
I surmised yesterday that I was the only defender of Vera. Looks like, today, I was right. No one likes him..I’m not even sure that Mike is going to cut him any slack..The surprise here, as others have noted, is that Mysta has no memory of Sawdust!.Proof positive that, whatever Mindy is becoming, it is not the original Moon Maid!.Reiterating what I said yesterday, though I am Vera’s only defender, I will also be the first to say that a Vera-Mindy pairing would not do well for either character in this strip..If Vera ends up with Mindy, look for both characters to go on extended, if not indefinite, hiatus from the strip!.What I’d like to see:.Mysta’s new role in Honeymoon’s life causes such discomfort for Sparkle that she (Sparkle) distances herself from her step-child and husband….Perhaps another round of Sounds-a-Plenty to help feed Sparkle’s own star fever….(Where I’m absolutely unsure that Mike would indulge me) A revelation that Vera did not cheat on Sparkle, as Fletcher-Collins implied, as they artificially drove a wedge between them….No, I’m not necessarily trying to drive Mysta back with Junior. Among other things, today’s strip verifies, once and for all, that Mindy is not Mysta, nor is she becoming her!.But it would be nice to “right” a former “wrong” in the development of Vera Alldid’s character.
Where I feel as if Mike is not cutting Vera any slack is this suggestion that Vera is, indeed, going after Mysta, knowing whose wife she once had been..Just as many of us have no idea what “chimera” really means, I don’t expect Vera to understand it all that well, either. He may not even know that this is what she is!
Mindy had her memories wiped, her DNA altered, her personality subsumed by Mysta’s and no longer exists as “Mindy.” Mysta’s Lunarian DNA is clearly becoming dominant. Mysta no longer needs her gloves in order to cast electricity, which is proof that the changes are ongoing. It is no surprise that Mysta does not remember “Sawdust.” What is clear is that the ongoing changes are rendering her more Lunarian in nature. How might the (inevitable?) meeting with Governor and family accelerate further changes in Mysta? That physical changes are ongoing suggests that further mental changes are also likely. Might the telepathic capabilities of the Lunarians make Mysta’s transformation more profound? I find the changeling Mysta a fascinating character. Going by what is happening in the strip, it seems clear Mysta continues to evolve in ways that please fans of the character. Collins’ dreadful mistake is being sponged away. Bravo!
But they don’t know about the development of her Lunarian powers, and that’s why they have her equipped with a holster, possibly where a ray gun would be ensheathed.
I hope she doesn’t accidentally zap one of the other actors. She’s had trouble controlling her “zapping” strength in the past. She could accidentally accompany a fake ray gun blast with a real one from her hands if she’s into method acting.
Well, now that GoComics is back online, after being off last night when I wanted to post, it’s good to see Mysta giving hapless Alldid the cold shoulder. How did he get onto what should have been a closed set anyway? Shouldn’t security being arriving about now to toss him out?………………………………………………I see the Moon Maid fanboys are salivating again—and over an unlikely non-talent notable only for the large size of her boobs. Yep. Sad.
For a better understanding of my earlier comments, a week or so ago, my comments were responded to with the likes of “Mindy is dead” and, what I interpreted to the effect of “Mysta’s moving in.”.This is what I meant when I said, today, that Mindy is not Mysta, nor is she becoming her.
You can bet that the hidden Luna or Selenite society that relocated back to Terra is watching her very closely.I really don’t think they relocated back to Terra. I’m pretty sure they were just visiting … from where, I don’t know.
I was curious about Thistle Dew and looked up a bit of her story, which ran from Jan-May 1963. Here are three panels from Jan. 18, 1963, a day or two after she was first introduced:

Vera doesn’t seem to know this Mysta is not the original. Then again, we don’t know if that information is common knowledge yet in Dick Tracy’s world.

The most recent use of “chimera” is in the area of genetic engineering. Of an organism that has dissimilar parts in its make up.
It kind of boils down to the basic idea of a creature made up of dissimilar parts, whether at a genetic or body part level.
