is it just me or does the Tracy character, more in the first frame, look out of place, so flat and sharp,, and the other characters and objects are round and soft looking. Mmmm It’s like cut and paste of two different comic strips MMMmm
Good Morning Mr. Bill..I was joking about Prince Valiant yesterday of course. However I’m serious when I say that if Mike and Joe were ever to do a small one shot cameo of a Doonesbury character (Mike, BD, Zonker) with Dick Tracy, I’d have to get a nice print made and have it matted and framed for my office.
Tracy’s got lots of good leads. That should keep the MCU busy for a while. Now, we have to learn about Axel. Tracy is asking the question that many of us were asking yesterday. Who is Axel?
The two greatest adventure strips in Tribune syndicate history are working together nicely here, and the pacing is brisk enough to keep readers just a little off-balance, so that the element of surprise lurks around every corner. I find the ever-expanding cast of characters challenging, but worth some effort. What I am not is the kind of full-on fanatic of comics that some commenters seem to be; I simply read each day’s strip and try to comment on it (rather than on some unrelated but fashionable topic), without keeping archives, collecting anthologies of older strips, attending comics conventions, or any of those other fan activities. I’m just a simple reader, and a fan only in the sense that I do read and comment each day and look forward to doing that….
This strip was poorly done for many years and was on life support. Compared to those days, this is comic heaven. And still people complain. Big thumbs up to Joe Staton and Mike Curtis for bringing this strip back to life and entertaining us with great stories and graphics like the kind we see today!
Re: stevelecher: We must have made his day! Look at how many comments were made just responding to him!.But what do I know?.Talk again about Mike and Joe vs. the previous Richard. You know, the one who won the pullet surprise….Kind of reminds me of what was going on in Annie. Check out today’s Annie! It’s a great example of what happened to that strip and why I stopped being an Annie fan..Hope Mike and Joe can do better with Punjab than what I saw in today’s Annie!.Last, and certainly least: In that last panel, doesn’t that detective look a bit like J. Straightedge Trustworthy?.Uh-oh! Incoming tomatoes!.Think I’ll be making marinara tonight!
wow! the almighty mcpheeters and joshlyons voice their displeasure.. wait.. who EXACTLY are you two? have i ever seen posts by EITHER of you before today?
Many, many thanks Pequod77 That was wonderful. Now , if we were to take it a step back in time, how would Harold Grey pencil this? on a good day? Hey but still, Mr. Stanton rocks.
Can you imagine the cross between styles we’d have if they continued with the Popeye crossover that was hinted at not long ago? :)
I remember well the MAD comic musical that some people mentioned yesterday. Short recap: Annie was kidnapped by Rex Morgan M.D. (who was fascinated by her lack of pupils). Dick Tracy and Tarzan teamed up to rescue her. It ended with a shootout in Snuffy Smith’s home.
I remember versions of “I Get a Kick Out of You” (or rather “I’d Like to Practice On You” as Rex Morgan sang it), “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “Old Man Rivers” (or “Old Man Dithers” sung by a dying Dagwood Bumstead) and “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)” as the finale.
I’m pretty sure that Mort Drucker was the artist, though master of the craft that he was, he couldn’t resist adding some subtle shading to the more cartoonish characters, making them appear far more 3-dimensional than they are in their own strips.
One more thought on the question as to whether this story is “boring” or not – - I just went back and re-read the whole week in order. It took about 2 minutes. For those who are on the impatient side, I strongly suggest waiting, and collecting a week’s worth of strips to read all at one sitting. This week’s strips flowed smoothly, and moved the story along very rapidly when read all at once. Try it, you might like it!!
Even though I don’t like L.O. Annie, I’ll reserve my judgement on the story after it’s over. I think I owe that to the writer and myself. I’m still trying to keep an open mind.
I hope Annie’s dog, Sandy, is OK. Hadn’t heard nothing about him since Annie’s strip ended four years ago. Some dogs grieve themselves to death over the loss of their beloved masters. Of course to a comic strip time means nothing if it did Annie would be a grandmother now. My main point is after waiting all this time I hope we Annie fans get a happy ending.
Thanks. I remembered the realistic shading and detailed creases and wrinkles in Dagwood’s clothing as he fell in a pool of his own blood, and figured that it had to be Mort Drucker.
