I wish I had to do laps and exercizes (sp?) when I was in elementary school instead of being put in outfield during a baseball game where I daydreamed.
We used to have to run three laps around the track outside our school (around a mile total length) before recess every day, but could do it at our own rate. Either way, this coach is just too tough, especially since the best judge of whether you’re running a good pace (and not too hard) is by making sure you could still talk without gasping too much for air.
At the start of ‘gym class’, we had to run three laps around the ‘gym’ which was where the basketball tea played their home games but the bleachers had been pushed back against the wall which made room(about 12 feet wide) around the edge ! !!
I’ve never met a Phy. Ed “teacher” who actually taught anything. From their title, you’d think learning about how the body works, what nutrition is and why exercise is important would be key elements to the “class”. But no. It was always “Run until you can’t breathe, do calisthenics until you can’t move, now play dodge ball.” And P.E. “teachers” wonder why they’re viewed as such a joke.
“This guy is so tough he made Michael bleach his hair blond before he had him run.”Even tougher than that – Michael had to bleach his hair while running. Yesterday it was brown, today it’s blond. Or maybe this shows what happened on another day.
Now that you mention it, I remember my school’s football and basketball coaches doing a daily jog around the neighborhood after school, and they certainly had enough breath to hold a conversation.
Today’s strip also brings back bad memories for me of a PE ‘teacher’ who hit the kids if they talked, yelled at us if we couldn’t climb the rope all the way to the ceiling, and generally made us hate exercise for years. I don’t know why people who hate kids go into the teaching profession to being with.
@summerdog coach isn’t wrong, the low-paid colorist is wrong. Michael, portrayed blonde for some reason, is talking to Brian Enjo, his new neighbor, also colored incorrectly.
“Dodge ball was another misery I had to endure.” For me, it was volleyball. I liked the game, but the game didn’t like me. I was always tripping over my feet and falling down. Needless to say, I was always the last chosen… =-O

Amazing ears the coach has. (He’s really driving Mike and the others to exhaustion, not to tip-top shape.)

Oh, this PE guy is just too much … Funny how I don’t remember this is any of the anthologies Lynn J. published!!! ;)

If you can sing, step it up but if you can still talk you’re doing fine.

Experts say that a good running pace actually involves being able to hold a conversation with the person next to you. Any good coach knows this.

So obviously psycho gym teachers weren’t limited to the U.S.

This guy is obviously an imposter. Where’s his whistle? No PE teacher would appear in public without his whistle.

Might be a former Marine Drill Instructor!

Could the coach have it wrong? Is Michael the dark haired boy and the blonde was the one speaking?
