Re Winwood: … and keyboards and vocals and some engineering and hell, I don’t know, probably designed the album covers.
P.S. LOVE all the puns!

Sorry, Stephen, but it’s been done before – and better – in 1972 by the comedy troupe The Credibility Gap featuring Harry Shearer (pre-Simpsons) and David L. Lander (pre-“Squiggy”)

Pastis, I liked this one, I know the concept is old but still funny.
I can’t wait for tomorrow when I will have time to listen to all the sound tracks posted by the others.

Nice homage to Abbott and Costello, Cartoon-Boy. Of course, that doesn’t get you out of the forty whacks you’ve earned. [N.B. Not 40 WACS you’ve put into big old urns….]

Pun-tastic! A classic home run! Hit all the bases. (No, I guess you’re saving the bass players for another pun.)

Radical_Knight about 10 years ago
They could make a sitcom of this guys job & life… whatever there is left of it by the end of the day; and get Mathew Perry to play Pastis, The Chandler character would be a great fit (I think).
Arianne about 10 years ago
Oh my rock gods! I just posted about Steve Winwood on Arlo & Janis, then find this here! Bravo! Stephan! Thanks for Talkin’ about my generation!

It was written into Abbott & Costello’s radio contract that they had to do the “Who’s On First?” routine at least once each season.

Then there was this Johnny Carson skit from 1982:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2IdZSuP0kA

I believe Dave Mason was the guitarist. Winwood played keyboards, as I recall. Good strip.

The problem is my teenage son (who loves “Who’s on first”) won’t get it, as all of the references are 30 years old.

These puns should be band.

Good thing Pastis didn’t have any more space… this could have gone on for pages.
Lorenzo Browncoat about 10 years ago
Slappey the Squirrel did the same joke, with rock bands, on an episode of Animaniacs. Still funny, tho’ but Bud n’ Lou did it better and funnier, for years.

This is the best take on “who’s on first” I’ve ever seen. Yay for an update!
Fido (aka Felix Rex) about 10 years ago
I was concerned that Pastis would be put down by the posters for this rotten chestnut (not the original, of course, but his take). He’s escaped needing to proclaim:“I’m a baaaaaaaaad boy!”
The Old Wolf about 10 years ago
Stephan, this is one of your more tortured and brilliant offerings.I look forward to more.

Epic take-off. You’ve surpassed your usual punniness, Pastis.
Ginny Premium Member about 10 years ago
It’s been ages since I heard the full “Who’s on First” routine. It’s 8 minutes and still a classic. Those guys were the best. Our comics these days mostly rely on f*** or smut for laughs – sad.
Alabama Al about 10 years ago
Sorry, but Goat shouldn’t have misunderstood at the beginning. After all the name of the band Moon played with was called “THE Whos”, and was never ever referred to as simply “Whos”.

mmduzi about 10 years ago
I had gotten sick of the Puns but this is great. A good riff on the greatest comic routine ever.
codedaddy about 10 years ago
This one joins my little collection of Stephan’s best pun-based jokes. It took some thought to create it. I do wish that Stephan would leave his own character out – there is sufficient recognition and admiration without that last panel there. I still play the “Who’s on First” snippet now and then and never fail to chuckle.
Alan Steenhouwer about 10 years ago

A very similar riff on Who and Yes being on stage at Woodstock was done by Skippy and Slappy Squirrel in Animaniacs decades ago
a swino about 10 years ago
Winwood plays keys, not guitar. POSEUR!
alviebird about 10 years ago
As a guitar player, it did not occur to me that many adults might not get the references.
Kind&Kinder about 10 years ago
Just to add my voice: among a lot of fine strips Stephan has done, this one made me laugh hardest. What a skillful use of a classic comedy routine blended with rock group puns. Kudos!
DirigoMark about 10 years ago
The names I recognized are legends. For all I know the rest are, too. Even if they’re not in my favorite band, they might be giants.

From Whacky-pedia:“A multi-instrumentalist, he can play keyboards, bass guitar, drums, guitar, mandolin, violin, and other strings.”“Steve Winwood – vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass (1967–1969, 1970–1974, 1994)”With the internet in its entirety at my fingertips, I am still able to say things to embarrass myself instead of taking a moment to look things up.I chalk it up to the low arc of high-heeled divers, whatever they are.

Alex – In your videos, you chose “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, which is Yes. But Howe isn’t playing guitar on it. Trevor Rabin is. (Squire ended up owning the rights to “YES” so the rest of the band did things as "Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford, Howe, when reuniting most (sans Squire) of the Fragile and Close to the Edge line up.)

Nice try Pastis, but still missing the edgy cleverness of the original “Who’s on first”. But, nice try.

kwymore77 about 10 years ago
Stephan could have phrased the last panel to mean “When Wood’s the guitarist for Traffic” in reference to Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones who will most likely never play with Traffic. Thus, Stephan would never receive his slugging from Rat.
claire de la lune. about 10 years ago
Who’s on next?
Cozmik Cowboy about 10 years ago
Well, yeah, WInwood is a fine guitarist, but he mostly played keys in Traffic; Dave Mason was the guitarist.
Steve Dutch about 10 years ago
Two of my colleagues are named Hu and Howe. One of my great unfulfilled dreams before I retired was to have someone named Watt hired so we could have a Hu, Watt and Howe committtee

This is the best pun strip that I’ve ever read.
DennisinSeattle about 10 years ago
Still getting comments after five days, just shows how good this strip is. This one makes up for a lot of bad puns. Pastis went beyond band names to the musicians. If he had 8 minutes worth of panels, he probably would have gone crazy.
claire de la lune. about 10 years ago
This has been the best strip yet for awhile.
