Aussie here…. We have Vegemite every day on toast. The trick is spread it thinly over butter/margarine on toast. Many folks unfamiliar with Vegemite spread it too thick (like peanut butter). I’m unaware of anyone using Vegemite as an ingredient in any dish? In relation to the Aussie Spaghetti Bog I know we use beef stock cubes, tomato sauce.

You can also use Vegemite to “point up” bricks when laying them… get the right colored bricks to match with it, and you’ve got a very well hidden mortar, and it’s aesthetically appealing…– It also has replaced attic insulation, and helped control the termite population in lots of houses….

Uuuups! Kinda missed somethin’ didn’t ya Lu….

Anyway, I think y’all are maligning that staple of Australian cuisine. I confess I was skeptical of it as well, until I actually stayed in Sydney for a few days and had Breakfast on the hotel’s Brekfast plan. There I was, that morninig, building a “Dagwood” type croissant of smoked salmon, cheseses and other treats, when there it was…. all in those nice litle “individual jelly” like packets you see on restaurant tables. I put one in my hand and contemplated it for a bit, when a Sydney business man came over and said, “eh it;’s good stuff maite….” So I tried it. And here’s what it is….

There’s a liquid beef bullion concentrate product popular in the UK (and advertised in the USA for a while) called Bovril… extremely salty. Well, that’s exactly the look, consistency and taste of Vegemite when you first bite/chew into it. Maybe even a thicker consistency. But it’s the aftertaste that gets ya. In essence, it’s almost like you chased that Dagwood sandwich down with nice warm “double bok” beer.

I got used to it! :-))) I’d eat it today, except for the sodium content.

Luann’s face when Delta tells her “Thanks for voting” sort of says it all. A lot of people didn’t vote last week…seems to happen in any non-presidential election. Then again, given the people in DC who “represent” us, look at what voting has gotten us.

Voting’s well and good, but I’m also in favor of an INFORMED electorate, which Luann is unlikely to ever be a member of with her study habits (I see academic probation at the end of this quarter).I’ll bet Quill! has voted absentee at least once in Aussie elections since he’s been in the states. You should be ashamed of your “girlfriend”, Quill!

Aside from Delta, students (and other young people) typically don’t vote in mid-term elections. I doubt Luann even knows who her Senators are. Delta would be more at home in Doonesbury where everybody is a democrat.

Before you vote you should be required to have a basic understanding of economics. The complete ignorance on this subject by the average voter has allowed demagogy by politicians who do or should know better than to advocate for plans which sound good and are easily sold to the ignorant masses but which often result in the opposite outcome. Always beware the plans of someone who bears no cost in their implementation and failure.

I am not sure why Delta would presume that Luann voted…. Luann’s expression suggests that she never really gave it a thought…. which is sort of expected with her attitude about most things. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I think today’s writing was simply a vehicle (a somewhat awkward vehicle) to be able to bring Delta back. The “vote” story is what is awkward to me, as I cannot fathom of Delta presuming Luann voted, and also calling to “thank” her for voting seems a bit of a stretch too. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++However, regardless of the awkward vehicle… I have to say it is nice to see Delta!++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++In general, the writing in today’s effort seems awkward…. not ONLY in Delta’s lines about voting… but also about the “Vegemite” as well. She teasingly questions Q about the secret INGREDIENT being Vegemite in panel 1, but in the punchline in panel 4 she states it is Vegemite spaghetti which suggests the whole sauce is Vegemite, not just an ingredient in, say, a tomato sauce. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++It is strange today. Usually the text for Luann is carefully written, bright and crisp. Today seems to be written by a different writer, or perhaps Greg was very rushed when he put this one together?

The first time I heard of “Vegamite” was around 1970, when I was in college and we had an R.A. from Australia. One day when the mail arrived, he had a box shipped to him all the way from Down Under, labeled “Vegamite – fragile”. We all assumed it was some kind of kitchen appliance ("The RONCO VegaMite = it slices and dices!) or something equally intriguing, so we waited for him to come claim the package and we could inquire about its contents. We were amazed to learn that it was in fact a box full of Mason jars of purple glop that he had ordered from overseas just to eat, and he admitted that he had to order it from home because no one in North America considers it edible.

Of course, it had to be Delta, calling all the way from Washington, to comment on balloting in Luann’s precinct. No one at Pitt CC (wearing an “I Voted!” sticker) could ask her “Have you voted yet?” on election day, because (1) the only people Luann is allowed to talk with is her old high school classmates, and (2) she maybe doesn’t really go to Pitt CC anyway, having dropped out after her first class.

So far, Luann’s “college experience” has been about like TJ’s food truck – an idea that was launched with great fanfare and then rapidly ignored. Perhaps its creator realized that he really didn’t have any good ideas for it, after all. Since Luann can’t blow up the campus for the insurance, can she maybe at least get a partial refund on her (i.e., Frank’s) tuition payment and use the money to do something interesting instead of just hanging out with her old high school buddies?

Since this is the second week of November, we should be well into exploring the premise for which the cast was at long last allowed to age, namely “Lu Ann leaves her high school days behind her and goes to college!” Yet here we are, with Lu Ann hanging out with Quill and talking to Delta. It is as if Mr. Evans had thought of exactly one idea to explore under the new scenario (“Bernice never sees her roommate! Won’t that be hilarious!!!”), and having milked it dry to the point that the “gag” is now merely tedious, it’s back to the same old people doing the same old things that were the fodder for the strip trough the previous decade. Will Lu Ann ever move on with her life? If not, then we might as well have the cop-out “It was all just a dream” episode, in which Luann wakes up and realizes that none of this actually happened, and she is still a high-school junior. Hello, Mr. Fogarty!

As I See It— One Man’s Opinion. Around a year and a half ago, I had the feeling that big things were in store for Luann & her pals. I thought that the strip would head into more of a soap-opera type of direction with some (heh-heh) adult types of situations. Needless to say, life has not changed that much for the characters; they are attending different schools, that’s all. The regular readers know I have had a terrible record when it comes to making predictions, so I guessed wrong one more time. I will continue to read Luann’s “adventures” every day, but I will not get too excited or expectant about what the future will bring. For the time being, I have nothing more to comment upon…

Also, I’ve seen plenty of Bing Images under the heading of “naked librarians.” I’d have to find appropriate pictures to portray Professor John Neinver, Reverend Mel Marshall, Doctor Morris Benson, as well as a couple of scholars named Milford Spencer and Howard Phillips Fort.
