I converted my 21 speed 700c hybrid to a 24 speed. I just this week put a new “Mege Range” 11-34t cassette & freehub/wheel on it (replacing a 14-28t.) That gives me a “granny” gear, and an extra-high top gear. Also, new tires.
I always think joggers and bicyclists take their lives into their own hands when they go on roads with cars and trucks. That’s why I prefer a nice, safe gym.
I hate riding in traffic but sometimes you have no choice. Where I live the sidewalks are so random. Seriously, to get to the store for groceries I take one sidewalk. In order to get to the park which is a few blocks east of the store I have to make a gigantic U because there is no sidewalk between the two places, except for one lone block that has a random sidewalk that connects to nothing since there’s no sidewalks on either side of it. And there’s no sidewalks that lead to the other big shopping area either, and the shoulder is great up to the intersection before the one I’d have to turn at to get there. If I don’t want to go way out of my way (or be stuck on one side of town) I have to ride in traffic some. I really wish there were either bike lanes or better sidewalks. But the cars here are pretty good about bikes though so that’s something at least. I agree with the other person, good thing dad was wearing his helmet! Calvin wouldn’t be laughing if dad had never come home.
I give thanks that I live in Louisville, Colorado, near Boulder, where cycling, and running, is valued. EG, I can bike into Boulder (maybe 7-9 miles away) and only spend one mile on a state road, which has 6 ft bike lane. There is a movement afoot (I think it’s still alive) where states are taking old railroad grades and converting them into walking/hiking/biking corridors. If you are a frustrated cyclist / walker, I suggest Googling “bike path railroad grade” and finding a local movement to support! Good things are happening in this world of woe!
Had a friend years ago who rode his bike everywhere. We both lived in the city. He said his one rule was “never let a bus pass you.” And ride in the street, not on the sidewalk! The sidewalks are for pedestrians and little kids. Vehicles of any kind belong on the road, with traffic, and obeying all the rules that apply to any other vehicle.
Bill Waterson was the best fricking comic strip writer ever. His artwork, his unspoken dialogue, his imagination. Brilliant. I wish I or another comic strip writer would create a world so enjoyable to visit every day like he did. We miss your talent Mr. Waterson that’s for sure.

Just think of all the character he’s building. I take a degree of satisfaction seeing Calvin laugh at him.

Now we know where Calvin got his love of dangerous wagon-riding!

I’m pretty sure that’s why golf was invented.

Bike riding is better in Scandinavia and in Germany: whether you’re doing it for pleasure or just to get where you want to be.

No, I’d rather have a hobby I love and continue to loathe my job. It would push me to find an equivalent job.

I am 20 and I’ve never learned how to ride a bike.
I suppose it’s weird but it wasn’t necessary for me. I don’t need a bike.

Strange, the front wheel wasn’t bent on impact. Maybe he bent it after the accident in frustration.

Interesting philosophy dad espouses in the last panel.I like the touch of the broken bottle and the shouting motorist in panel 3 too.
