Gunther's mom: "I asked Mr. Gray to dinner so you two can get to know each other" Gunther: "Why would we want to do that?" Gunther, quit overreacting.

Hmm⊠breaking out the fancy plates, huh? Panic mode! Just more of Gunther "pushing the big red buttonâ at the sight of an âitty bitty caterpillarâ⊠â A Gray train leaves the station at approximately 4:37 P.M. A Green and black one leaves Peru, for a stop at Moony U. at approximately 4:32. They are both headed to âBergertownâ at roughly the same speed and didnât make any other stops along the way. If this is soâŠâŠ what time is dinner?

Aye⊠a crafty lass, that one!!! She prepares a âshowdownâ in a âsteel cageâ⊠okay, more like an atmosphere of âawkard conversationâ and what Gunther dreads⊠âgetting to know thine enemyââŠ. â Iâm supposing that Gunther would like to have gotten to find out things about Mr. Gray, but would have probably preferred to do it in an âau clandestineâ-like way, all âfurtiveâ and in a way that helps to fuel his mistrust of Mr. Gray, and through the âcomfortsâ of a âwall of dislikeââŠ.without actually getting to know him ⊠which is the more direct wayâŠ.

How many shades might there be to this Mr. Gray?
gromit82 about 10 years ago
Since it looks like this week is going to be focused on the relationships among Gunther, his mom, and Mr. Gray, I really hope that it ends with Gunther being able to tolerate his mom dating Mr. Gray. His attitude about that has been hard to tolerate.

I thought the purpose of the (improbable) Gunther-follows-Rosa-to-Peru story was to make him grow up and stop being a Mamaâs boy. Since that obviously failed â his âconcernâ for Mamaâs welfare is more nearly âjealousyâ â just what was that big adventure all about, anyway? Was it just to bring him back in a sweatshirt and a stubble?
Barry1941 about 10 years ago
Also unless Gunther is planning on living with his mommy for the rest of her life she deserves a life of her own.

I have to say once again that I very much hope Mr. Gray is an OK guy. Having him be a bad person and making Gunther his motherâs ârescuerâ would be a disgusting plot development and just plain bad writing.

Get over it Gunther, she is an adult and you should love her enough to want her to be happy. After my parents divorced my dad went his way with his girlfriend (the cause) and my mom just settled into another part of her life. Then she met the best guy in the world and my stepdad came to be and we all wanted her to be happy and were happy for them.
Chuck374 about 10 years ago
Her eyes in the second frame as she describes Mr. Gray as a friend seem to indicate that he is something more. Wonder if we are going to learn his first name soon.

Gunther⊠all your âgrowthâ is simply making you impolite, snarky, unfocused, and a person who is really not particularly likable. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++In my opinion, you should a) Meet Mr. Gray, give him a chance, and presuming he is not horrid person, see how the family unit may progress, b) Start looking inside YOURSELF and get some actual goals, aspirations, and DO something to become the person you want (or figure out you want) to be with your college experience, c) Let the damn âpeach fuzzâ grow out and become a true beard and mustache to give yourself a more distinctive look, and d) have some FUN without being snarky to others.

It is not an oedipal complex and it is all Guntherâs mother fault. Iâve seen it happen in real life and it happens when a young mother suddenly finds herself alone, either by widowhood, divorce or abandonment, with a young son.
To make the son feel better she starts treating him as the âMan of the Houseâ and make him feel as if he were the center of her life.If she has any relationship with another man, she keeps it hidden from him.
So the son grows and soon feel like his mother is HIS alone and nobody elseâs. As if she were his wife. He became jealous of any other man that enters her life. Because then everything that she told hims become a lie since it turns out that he is not the center of her whole life but just one of them.
Gunther is in this phase. It wouldnât surprise me that his motherâs relationship with Mr. Gray is years old and that she always kept it from him so he wouldnât be upset, but now that he has allegedly grown up she feels safe in announcing it to him.
Unfortunately he is reacting badly to the notion that he is not the only man in his motherâs life. But, then as I said, that probably is entirely the fault of his mother.
It happened in my family with my grandmother when she became a widow when my father was 2 months old. He was the youngest of 5 siblings, 3 boys and 2 girls. 10 years later she asked her sons permission to remarry. My dad and my uncles just say to go ahead and do so. Despite the fact that my oldest uncle was the bread winner of the family and that for all purposes he was the de-facto family head, he never felt that my grandmother belonged to them and acknowledged that she needed a companion of her own.
On the other hand, I saw the widow of a friend of mine get trouble from her son just because she had a new boyfriend. In her sonâs words, she was a slut that was sullying the memory of his deceased father.
I think that Gunther falls between those two categories. He feels betrayed because his mother dared to have a relationship with another man, but at the same time he knows that she has a life of her own. It is just that he is having a hard time to acknowledge that he has to share his motherâs affections.
maverick1usa about 10 years ago
It seems his train has arrived so the Gray train would have to derail & that wonât happen!
maverick1usa about 10 years ago
Maybe Gunther will realize his worries/fears are unfounded & worthless. Mrs Berger needs a friend her age!
Larry Zambrano Premium Member about 10 years ago
I donât feel like Evans is mistreating Tiffany. He is showing that she has a hard time acknowledging the fact that she is not as popular as she thought she was.
She is resentful that her father ordered to get a degree. And you are overlooking a very important fact, something that even Luann wondered about: She obeys her father without question. His orders are her commands.
That actually speaks really bad about Tiffany and her dreams. In order to succeed in a career as a public figure, she needs to be her own woman.
You see, she could have said yes daddy I am going to study but I want to be an actress so I am going to study drama. Yet here she is, dropping Psych and trying Bio. She is a lost puppy that is resenting the fact that she is not on her way to be famous. She is forgetting the fact that drop-dead-gorgeous women are ten cents the dozen in Hollywood. Unless she has a very special skill that makes her stand out of the crowd, her future will be that of a waitress or as a trophy wife.
Her dad knows that she has nothing special, so he wants his daughter to at least have something to help her earn a comfortable living.
Unfortunately I think she will end up marrying a famous man, so she can be famous by proxy.

As I pointed out, kids donât like it when their parent(s) date. They feel that the parent who dates is somehow dissing the other parent who contributed to that kidâs life.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 10 years ago
I still think that Mr. Gray will be Guntherâs biological fatherâŠ. who was long out of the picture. I think âMrs.â Berger was just her maiden name and she did not get married to Mr. Gray and simply used her maiden name for Gunther as well. I think Mr. Gray has entered back in the picture and now Mrs. Berger will be letting Gunther know.
JayBluE about 10 years ago
It could probably also be an âAlfred Hitchcockâ feature..
Snark-impaired about 10 years ago
Gunther, quit being a jerk. Your mom has as much right to date as you do. He really needs to move out. Doesnât he have some money saved up from his job in the library or the one he had in Peru? Doesnât seem like he spends that much on other stuff. I know itâs expensive, but itâs really needed in this case!
Snark-impaired about 10 years ago
Or that there would be anything wrong with it if he was right!

Is anyone else getting a little tired of Gunther week after week? Maybe the strip should be renamed to âGunther.â
Ginny Premium Member about 10 years ago
Iâm wondering. Is this the first time a single man has been invited to dinner/first time Mom went out on a date? If so, itâs incredibly sad. Comments should be addressed to her lack of a social life in order to please her son rather than the result of that action.

Gunther â look up âOedipus Complexâ. Mom â have him start looking at colleges out-of-town.

While I havenât read the book (and donât intend to) Iâm thinking the name Mr. Gray might be a take-off on the main character in â50 Shades of Greyâ (Mr. Grey). It says that Ma Berger wants a little more excitement in her life, though the image of Mr. Gray (as he is drawn) doesnât seem to suggest that. But who knows.. as the word âgrayâ suggests.

Greg is down shifting again. From a potential South American adventure/love story to a innocent little chat with the hot to trot Tiffany, to a bland dinner with Mr. Gray. Oh well. I should have known better to expect anything more.

Gunther got away from his mother. But instead of using that separation to establish his independence, he obsessed on his motherâs love life and came home deliberately to try to disrupt it. Thatâs 100% Guntherâs doing, not his Momâs. I canât imagine that anyone finds him a likable character now.
