Is it just me, or has Bernice lost the title of “Luann’s best friend” to Dez?

Bernice’s posture says everything – she a nag and a scold. I think her problem is she is one of these people that have to have it her way all the time. She never realizes that her way might work good for her but might not work for others. Instead of trying to be right all the time, Bernice should try being a friend instead – else she’s got a miserable, miserable life ahead of her.

Luann and Dez have hit off fabulously, much to Bernice’s jealous rue. Things like this happen at college, and old friendships give way to new…. We’ll see what happens here between Luann and Bernice, which may be the true crux of this arc….

“For more fun, match the comments vs. the subject matter.”Are you volunteering to tag 9,000+ strips?Actually, though, if you look at the tracking data for the previous 3 months, and then for 2011 to 2014, you can see what the top and bottom 1 or 3 strips are for each period. Generally, comment activity doesn’t follow the characters as much as it does some specific thing that happened in the strip, such as Toni proposing to Brad, Toni’s girl biting Brad’s harassing boss at the fast food place, or Gunther telling his mother to not call him “Gunthie” any more. But, it’s a pretty sure bet that anything revolving around Luann’s parents will not net anywhere near as many comments.

If Bernice was a true friend to Luann, she would put a lid on her nasty snark and simply advise her friend once. If you think about it, it’s how Quill handles Luann. Instead Bernice is a bossy scold who has to be proven right – and that’s not being a friend to Luann. We on 7 days of Bernice getting bent out of shape because Luann isn’t obeying her orders.

RB2… although at a single glance, Bernice is a bit “harsh” with her negativism, you really have to put her response in context with the lifetime (30 years of real time) of crazy, hair-brained schemes that Luann comes up with. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++To me, in many ways, Bernice is the “Ethyl Mertz” to Luann’s “Lucy Ricardo”.

So, RB2, what I am saying is that even IF Luann has a “good” idea (not sure in this case), it would be natural for Bernice to be skeptical and to give Luann a bit of a “jaundiced eye” in terms of having her become more grounded in reality.

I’ve used tarot cards before. Sometimes it really helps to get a completely new take on a situation or decision. Dez may be just just the person to jar Luann’s thinking.

I’d love to see Luann go on this trip and have a great time. It only takes some planning, which Dez (and Luann’s Mom) can help with. Bernice is always such a pessimist — only sees problems, never offers solutions. Dez’s cards are just a prop. It’s up to the person doing the reading to interpret the cards, so using them is a non-confrontational way for Dez to discuss aspects of Luann’s trip with her — and find solutions to potential problems, like where she’s going to stay or the possible need for birth control.

While I don’t think that Luann has thought this trip through, Bernice needs to learn that it is far easier to arrange someone else’s life for them than to straighten out your own. Luann is right – Bernice isn’t her parent, and the reality is that Luann will only learn by being allowed to make her own mistakes. As someone who has taken some great leaps of faith that have had varying levels of success, I think that Luann needs to take a few chances and go for something she wants. Dez’s reading may give Luann the chance to look at pros and cons from a different, less judgemental angle than Bernice’s overly familiar (and somewhat controlling) approach.

Nailed it. Nobody likes someone being a Scold or Debbie Downer. Bernice just wants to boss “her friend” around and she just wants to be right all the time. One gets the opinion that if Luann went to NYC and got mugged, that Bernice would be all smug with the “I told you so.”

Exactly, when a friend or a love one doesn’t listen to your advice, a grown up person would just let it go instead of constantly harping on it. If the other person has decided to ignore your advice, continually piling it on will just cause that person to dig in their heels more.

Again I say, we’re not talking about Bernice spending 10 days in NYC with Quill but rather Luann. It’s Luann’s life, let her live it!

There’s nothing wrong with a good friend offering advice. But Bernice doesn’t know when to let it go. She continues to harp and snark and scold. I really think she gets off on being able to say “I told you so.” Being a good friend also means being able to give and take. Every idea that Luann comes up with is greeted by Ms. Bossy with nag, nag, nag, nag, nag, nag, nag. And who is to say that these things that Bernice is telling her are things Luann ‘needs to know?" Night if I know without a doubt what is good for you, aren’t I trying to control your life by making you live by my standards. We need to remember that everyone is different and process life’s information differently. That’s not be a good friend in my book!

Friends sometimes have little spats. I agree Bernice is a little jealous that Luann dismisses her warnings and misgivings so breezily jumping after Dez’s divination cards. What I want to see very much, is, what will Luann do if Dez’s cards agree with Bernice and predict disaster for the trip? Would Luann lash out at Dez as she did at Bernice, or meekly accept it and move on?

Luann is right, she already has two parents and she doesn’t need another one. Bernice is acting like a thorn in Luann’s side, who needs a “friend” like that? Bernice is obviously green with envy of Luann’s good fortune, that is, having a cute boyfriend and a possible trip to NYC, and now the support from Dez.

If Bernice wanted to be supportive as a true friend would be,but thinks the trip is problematic, why doesn’t she nicely ask Luann questions, such as, “Where will you stay?” and “What will you do all day while Quill is working?” She could help her plan a fun and exciting trip instead of standing there with her hands on her hips all bossy like and saying, “I just wonder how smart this New York idea is.” Really?! Bernice has decided that the trip is out of the question for Luann because it’s not “smart,” therefore it’s a stupid idea. Who does she think she is?

A smart friend would try to find a way to go with Luann and Quill, thereby eliminating the exclusiveness of the trip between Luann and Quill and the problems that have been brought up in that regard, and then Luann would have a companion to see the sights and hang out at the pool with while Quill works.
