Yeah, the comedians all miss the ready-made Bush punchlines, but 8 years of stupidity and malfeasance are no laughing matter.

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes – and I see many of them in the audience here today – our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

As I said during the Bush 43 administration concerning Bush’s malapropisms: Even the most articulate speaker occasionally stumbles on a word or phrase. It’s simply a given in public speaking, and the more you speak the more examples there will be. It would be very strange(and very disturbing) to NOT be able to find any rhetorical slip-ups from Obama.

However, in Bush’s case the sheer volume of missteps from his speeches indicates he is not a man who has great suppleness of thought. As a critic once commented on the Bush clan: “These [in a corporation] are the guys you may want as your division heads, but not as the CEO.”

All of Obama’s verbal mishaps seem just like the kind of things I say when I’m tired and stumbling over my words and grammar. Even the 57 states thing doesn’t surprise me. Bush’s malapropisms seemed to go far beyond the stumbles of a fatigued man and into the absurd ramblings of a man of (at best) average intelligence trying to make himself sound insightful and intellectual.

I remember once, and I just can’t remember when or where or why, I heard Bush say something incredibly intelligent sensitive and thoughtful.

For a short time afterword my entire world-view was shattered and I had no idea what to do with myself.

Fortunately Bush came through with sufficient subsequent idiocy that I soon returned to my former self.

He meant 47 states, he wasn’t going to campaign in states 48, 49 and 50. Listen to the video. He meant to to say 50 states- except for 3 states- 2 being Alaska and Hawaii. He mistakenly said 50……..7 states. (note the pause…….). He was never asked how many states there are. He was to campaign in 47 states. A simple gaffe. He should of said 50-3 equalls 47. He instead said “………7”

Obama’s simple slip of the tongue is NOTHING compared to the inherent grammatical stupidity from some of Bush’s statements like “is our children learning?” and “childrens do learn”.

Isn’t it funny how the wingnut right went from “He’s a slick, fast-talking Chicago shyster” prior to the election, to “He can’t speak without a teleprompter” after?

Actually, Obama’s done any number of off-the-cuff, unscripted, interactive appearances (remember the Obama-vs-the-entire-Republican-Senate-Caucus thing?), and generally he’s quick on his feet, articulate, and gets the better of his opponents.

You were probably thinking of the sound made by Sarah Palin when she forgets to take her gloves off.

It’s common in children, and in adults with undeveloped emotional maturity, to return a criticism with the same criticism…instead of listening and responding to the actual cricism..

This same emotional immaturity is really the only way one can explain the oft repeated comments about Obama and the teleprompter. Teleprompters are commonly used by most public speakers, so their use is nonpartisan. Bush II certainly used one as often as Obama.

At least when Obama ignores the teleprompter it’s his opponents that worry about what he’s going to say, not his supporters.

Just for the record, I don’t think Sarah is the brightest tool in the shed but I guess you are right - emotional immaturity is the only way all political attacks can be characterized.

Thank you for being the emotional immaturity poster boy.

Those who criticize Obama for using a teleprompter seem to think he relies on it, as does a PalinBush, to remind him what to say. In fact, he uses it to keep his very active mind on task. When PalinBush misspeaks, we’re embarassed because we can tell that s/he has failed to comprehend some idea. By contrast, Obama’s misspeakings are likely to come from his conflating too many ideas.

For example, during the primary campaign when he spoke of 57 or 58 “states,” he may have been thinking of all the (57? 58?) electoral districts–several of which (such as American Samoa and Guam) neither he nor Hillary were ever likely to visit, though both went to Puerto Rico. Obama misspoke in referring to all of them as “states,” but at least he, unlike most of his “telepromtper” critics, is aware of their existence.

All mistakes can always be explained. Fatigue, speaking too much, teleprompter malfunction, insufficient grasp of language - whatever. Obama delivers very well with a prepared speech and is not so great while speaking extemporaneously. And if he stays long enough, he will make his fair share of mistakes. Nothing to be ashamed there.

If only he and all his followers would admit this, the issue would go away.

The funniest thing from Obama’s mouth is anything beginning with “Not that I’m…”, after which he goes on to say, be, do, or attempt whatever he has started out denying.

My favorite is still “Not that I’m in favor of big government,….”

Finding himself talking to the controversial rock star Courtney Love at a Hollywood party, Mr. Gore attempted to charm her by telling her he was a fan. Rather than just accepting the easy compliment, Love cross-examined him. “He goes ‘I’m a really big fan’,” said Love. “And I was like ‘Yeah, right. Name a song, Al’.” The answer came limply back: “I can’t name a song, I’m just a really big fan.”

Sorry, I’m speechless. That seems to be the safest thing.
