Isn’t it time Annie gets her own comic strip back? I can’t believe Tribune couldn’t get up enough papers to make it worth their while. I’m sure Mike and Joe could find a team capable of handling Annie as well as they have done Dick Tracy.

Lizard Lass: Yes and no. Mysta and Honeymoon started using the anime-style honorifics awhile ago, but at the time it definitely did seem to come out of nowhere.

They have a rather unique relationship, and Honeymoon is at the right age to be reading Shojo Manga and watching anime, so I’ll give it a pass. ;)

By the way, “Onee” is a homophone for “Oni,” the Japanese word for demon, and the name of the race of horned aliens from Rumiko Takahashi’s ‘Urusei Yatsura,’ at least one of whom is renowned for her ability to discharge vast amounts of electricity.

Someone noted that, thanks to the recent crossover, Moon People are technically canon in Funky Winkerbean …

… But by that reasoning, they’re also canon in Lum & Abner, Gasoline Alley, Snuffy Smith and Annie as well.

Comic reality is like time, it stretches and flexes a bit, but eventually self-corrects.

The context of the use of names is abundantly clear. Mysta and Honeymoon have become exceptionally close in the past year (readers’ time). On June 10th the terms Imoto-Chan (Younger Sister) and Onee-San (Older Sister) were introduced. Mysta says, “It’s what we spoke about, isn’t it, Imoto-Chan?” We appreciate the closeness of the relationship at once. No extensive exposition is required, which is yet another example of the superior nature of storytelling in this strip, imo.

Does anyone know if Mindy has a job to help pay her bills?

You’ll love it, Gweedo. We recently remodeled it and installed a high speed internet connection. A nice quiet environment here.

I don’t suppose that letters to the syndicate would make much impact, even if they got dozens of them. The fact is that they sell to the newspapers. If there are not enough newspapers demanding the strip, there is no way that the syndicate is going to produce it.

Newspapers almost always have to delete a strip to make room for anything new. In the couple of reader surveys I’ve seen, Annie ranked the lowest of all strips carried by a newspaper in terms of reader demand.

I would imagine that actual “print” newspaper circulation does not matter as much as it used to. I’m sure that TMS is paid by GoComics and Comics Kingdom for the rights to run the strip online. Many of the newspapers that do not run the strip (and many who do) link to one of these sites in their online version. These could be hefty fees because I also believe it is likely that more people read the strip online than in the newspapers. The times they are a-changin’.

I enjoy the Japanese honorifics. I use them myself, with a fellow, long-time anime fan. She regards me like an older brother, so she calls me “onii-chan.” Hence, as my little sister, I call her “imouto-chan.”

GOOD NEWS: I saw my regular eye doctor today. The vision in my left eye has improved from 20/50 to 20/40. He said that I will need new glases when my eye has totally healed. (I will see the eye surgeon on July 22). Thanks again for your prayers and good wishes.
