You’re a wonder, Mr. Gray.

“My trucker”, said no one ever. Gray and Guntmom must have a great job, if he’s willing to just straight-up start this second job without asking to be hired first.
krys723 about 9 years ago
IDK about anybody else, but I find this rather odd. Why would this man want to help these people who never met him? And why would they let him? I’m sure Mr. Gray is a good guy, but I just find this odd.

New poll up: Can Mr. Gray be Trusted?
Bernice’s Grades1) 15 votes – Other.2) 12 votes – Suffering because she’s too busy as an RA.4) 5 votes – Suffering because of brownie cravings.3) 4 votes – Suffering because Luann keeps calling about Brad and Toni’s wedding plans.5) 2 votes – Suffering because she’s too busy thinking about Tiffany and Gunther.Other: We will never find out because it’s not comical material; Not suffering at all; She will be the valedictorian of her graduating class and go on to be president; Honor student; Bee is an A student preparing for Woman’s Studies; straight A’s, of course; Straight A’s for Bernice, same as always.; Straight A student as usual.; She’s kicking arse and taking names in every class.; Brownies and gossip and ferrets and parties! Who has time for classes?!; her grade are fine – she always made good grades in HS while dealing with drama; Easily keeping a 4.0; Her grades are just as good as they were when she was in high school.

Well, now we know that Mr. Gray will be a regular character, because Frank has made his requisite “who IS this guy?” outburst.

Greg is writing Frank as a complete moron these days.

This might bear reposting, to help “tie in” just why Mr. Gray might be motivated to offer assistance…-

Mr. Gray impresses more every day. Who is he, really? a mob boss incognito (in Witness Protection)?

Mr. Gray, if I’ve counted correctly, has so far said less than three dozen words. That’s taking into account that the first two complete sentences he said only varied by one word. Shortest utterance was the single word " me" and the other two were short, flat, declarative sentences. Mostly he’s been silent, and thus underestimated. I think this is why so many seem to look askance at his sudden emergence. The only question is whether this is a matter of Still Waters Run Deep or Run Silent, Run Deep.

We know Mr. Gray used to manage a club, but what is he doing now that requires him to have a trucker in the area on call? And just what kind of club did Mr. Gray run in Vegas? None of this matters though, since the googly eyed Nancy has checked out the goods, and emphatically likes what she sees! Purrr! Oh well, as long as the trucker is Dirk:)

Mob connections?

I wonder if his “trucker” people are relatives of the people who got rid of Jimmy Hoffa?

My dad was like Mr. Gray, he spent his entire working life networking and building relationships with people that he might need in a crisis. His Rolodex had the home phone number of all those people. If a hurricane took out the electric substation that supplied power to the cold storage warehouse he was responsible for, he was one of the few people that could call the power company at 3:00 AM on a holiday Sunday morning and a repair crew with several flatbed trucks with new transformers would be in the parking lot by 5:00 AM. He loved to get things done, when no one else could and demonstrate that ability. So, it does not surprise me that he is helping, just showing off. They will hire Mr. Gray for his ability and the phone numbers in the Contact List of his smart phone.

LuAnn’s Dad: What do we owe you Mr.Gray?
Mr. Gray: Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, consider this a gift.

I wonder if Mr. Gray has mob connections? That would be a cool story line, but I’ll bet we won’t go there. LOL

Its amazing to me that so many people think, including my implied references, that being a Vegas club manager means you have the mob as a silent, motivational partner somehow. Actually, from what I understand, Vegas might have some vestige of the mob operating small little ventures such as prostitution, or similar “cottage” industries, but it does not have any connection to the real money, which are the casinos and the casino hotels and clubs. It’s mostly corporate, or billionaire controlled now. And the 15 year period he mentioned would be well within that change. Given that though why would he not be very capable of having a lot of contacts he could pull from, and knowledge of how to get things done in essentially an entertainment venue? Plus the local government, with permits, and fire inspections, and all that have to be considered. So being Luannverse his help here makes all the sense in that world. I like how Frank is so frustrated and confused. I think its just his being a DAD and wanting to control everything, but he will get over it.
I know I always bring facts and reason into this blog, but that is the way my crazy mind rolls.

In my interpretation…. I am thinking that more likely than not it is not Moony’s fault for the late notice… more likely than not it is the chain of notification that resulted in the late notice. I can easily imagine the Moony Theater Department releasing the materials a week ago, and letting their “go-between” (probably Quill alone, but perhaps a few others) be notified…. then Quill being busy with classes and other things forgot until the last minute. As a professor myself, I see this sort of thing ALL THE TIME.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
6A rather minor plot movement…. but still interesting. To me, it is looking like Nancy is on the verge of being smitten with Mr. Gray…. even on the edge of being smitten BEYOND just wanting him to work on the warehouse. It must be Mr. Gray’s “go-get-it-done” attitude that makes Mrs. Berger “swoon” too. :)

I bet the “Trucker” is Dirk.
Willow Mt Lyon about 9 years ago
I think Mr. Gray retired about a year ago, and he wants to get back to work. He is offering himself to manage the warehouse. It is more relaxing than managing a casino, but it gives him something to do. He is good at what he does, he enjoys it and he is jumping into the opportunity to manage a start up business where he knows his knowledge is needed.

Club “manager” in Las Vegas? Considerable pull in the trucking industry? Only known as “Mister Gray”? See the Clyde Weston character on Days Of Our Lives for details…..

He ran a club in Vegas for 15 years. He still has active contacts in some kind of business. Mr. Gray, please don’t be mob.
Ginny Premium Member about 9 years ago
Mr. Gray ran a thriving business for 15 years, so he has lots of good contacts, including trucking. They didn’t go away just because he’s not in that business any longer.

Yesterday, you reminded me of the fuss over Sun when I said that the people here aren’t too PC. Well, I still think that we’re a pretty open group and not overly sensitive. I also thought Gary could have done a better job with Sun, but it was an artistic thing not a human rights thing. Yeah, I’m pretty comfortable with the comments here and some of them are very good.

In the meantime, I like the Mr. Gray mystery thing……….it’s a page turner and everyone can speculate on what is hidden in his past.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 9 years ago
Implausible… you are correct that a student should not be their go-between….. but in the fictional reality of the comic…. Quill has always be the U’s go-between.
junemmoffatt about 9 years ago
Hire him? Sounds more like “Accept his assistance!”

And Luann is about to make a running tackle to bring Quill down and get him to pay attention to her.

I get the impression that Mr. Gray isn’t working on a job, he just sees some friends (or friends of friends) who need some help and he’s in a position to give it. If he gets a new job out of it, that’s just a bonus.

> But we already know Quill came all the way from Australia because Moony’s theater department is among the best.>Yes, it’s so great that they don’t even have a place to perform or rehearse, and their main drama instructor has to turn to an untrained amateur to show her how to design a set. The Moony Uni drama department is just the feeble excuse that Quill used so that he could come back to the USA to be with Luann during his third senior year of high school. (First at Pitt, then in Australia, and at Pitt again.)

I would love it if Gray registers his first emotion—disgust—upon hearing the place will be named after an opportunistic explosion.

The portly Mr. Gray was introduced as someone who works with Gunther’s mom. He seems to be in his 50s, where Gunther’s mom is probably in her mid 40s, like Nancy. He had a casino background, surrounded by beautiful ladies, but his current companion is rather drab. I don’t know where they work, but the fact he still works and still has connections in a different city is strange. Could he possibly be Gunther’s repentant, long lost dad finally returning to the girl and son that he abandoned 20 years ago? To me, this is as interesting as wondering if and when Gunther is going to have sex with Tiffany.

“This just in ….. Karen Evans, daughter of famed “Luann” cartoonist Greg Evans, will undergo emergency eye surgery to correct an extreme case of strabismus”^Wow!!!- And I’ve heard permanent ball bearing implants in the orbital socket is a procedure with a pretty steep cost! I’ve heard it rounds out in the Six million dollar range….
JayBluE about 9 years ago
I’m sure that if Mr. Gray is …connected, then Gunther will be the first in line to go: " Aha!!! Unhand my mother, you scoundrel!!! I knew there was something wrong with you!!!…. Well..I didn’t know what at first… but it still counts!!!!"
