-Just as Bernice agonized over what Piro would think if she just called and invited him for coffee, Bernice is now agonizing over whether Gunther would even talk to her on the phone if she called, or answer a text if she sent one.

But the difference is, she probably still has an attraction to Piro, and just feels bad about mistreating Gunther…

This just in, by camel express: some Democratic members of the US House of Representatives (remember that place?) have ‘occupied’ the House, chanting that they won’t go on July 4 break until the House passes a gun control bill. In revenge, the House Republican leadership pulled the plug on C-Span. So all 2.5 US residents who watch C-Span (and who aren’t reporters) are outraged, I tell ya…

-I honestly think Bernice’s concern is not because she is suddenly interested in Gunther (Guntherlicious? Yesh…), but because she is a constant worrywart about whether she is Doing The Right Thing. Remember how she covered herself up to go check the lock on her door, when she had to walk past Piro?

Perhaps Bern wrote the same way teachers used to make us write on lined paper, after school (after there became more detentionees than blackboards):

“I will not be a stupid dummy head. My friends are not puppets, and I’m not a marionette maker. I will learn from our experience. And I don’t want Hair on my couch, anymore. -Or, perhaps in the form of the old standard, the 500 word essay:

“I am sorry. In fact, I am very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, verrry, verrrrrry, very, very……..

Ha, Ha, Ha!-I’ve had some teachers who liked to do that, to students (probably because it meant that they had to stay there, too!)…some kids in class tried to be slick, and write all the sentences like this:

(Example: “I will learn to behave and not disrupt class”)

    1. I will learn to behave…(etc.)2. I will learn to 3. I will learn to4. I will learn 5. I will-…and so on, trying to copy down the paper, as if it made the process faster. Most teachers accepted it, so as long as you reached the “prescribed sentence quota”. But you had some teachers who were ‘sadistic’ enough to take it away, and make you do it all over, again. In either case, for many, the whole process did prove to be a deterrent….

?? It’s arguable that Berneice owes Gunther any apology. Gunther seems to believe he can pick any girl – without a mutual signal – and that she should go for it. Some guys do pretty well at that – some guys also own twenty houses – but not most guys. It did look like Gunther made a quick jump to Berneice because he didn’t know how to follow up with Tiffany. Real life stuff.

Bern? Why You Do Yourself and ESPECIALLY Gunther a BIG Favor? Take that Massive Rambling ‘Epistle’ You Wrote and:

    1) Soak it in Lighter Fluid2) Go To Gunther’s Front Door3) Ignite Said ‘Epistle’4) Ring the Doorbell5) Hide in the Nearby Bushes6) And As a Panicked Gunther Frantically STOMPS the flames with His size 13 KEDS, YOU LEAP from the Bushes and Yell, “Apology ACCEPTED!”7) Then Run Off Into the Gathering Darkness Singing at the Top of Your Lungs, Sly and the Family Stone’s “Runnin’ A-Way!”

There. Who says ‘Forgiveness’ can’t be FUN? YOU Bern, will save on Postage, and at the SAME time save Gunther from a lifetime of Alimony Payments, Therapy, and above all, AGGRAVATION…..,

Bernice’s apology letter is not about a burgeoning interest in Gunther; it’s about her need to feel better about herself. She hasn’t even tried talking to him so she takes the coward’s way out. I, for one, hope Gunther sees that his approach to her has been wrong and moves on. I just wish he hadn’t gotten hurt by Bernice’s failed scheme.

There are a couple things I notice about the panels today everybody, or anybody who might read my humble contribution. First, Bernice sits up straight backed, almost formally. Luann is more laid-back, or leaning in on the table. When they are in Luann’s room she relaxes but in this public place (the Fuse coffee shop) she seems more formal. Maybe its the subject of her magnum opus she has in that nicely secured business manila envelope. Will it be just a letter she is basically sending to herself? Or will she get the courage to one, mail it, or even better, two, give it to Gunther, or three, best of all, go see him personally, apologize, ask for his forgiveness, then attack his body (no not the last few words, this is a family strip -:). Finally, the Fuse itself. It seems to be doing pretty well. Theater presentations, the Cafe is doing fine, TJ must be getting his investment back. But will we see Pru, who would advise Bernice to do some version of number 3 I bet, or Leslie, or Mr. Gray, etc., etc. I hope Bernice finally finds some way to communicate and have a serious boyfriend with Gunther. I think they are made for each other. Of course, there is always the Rosa angle. I don’t think GE plans to keep her in Peru forever. There is Yale you know, or Mooney and Gunther. Nerds RULE!!!!

4I am feeling a sense of trepidation and foreboding concerning today’s comic (especially coupled with some of my concern about yesterday’s comic):Even though there are other options expressed above… to me… seeing Bernice’s “tome” of an apology to Gunther has me fearing what is IMO a worst case scenerio. Namely, IMO because she has such a LONG, and LABORIOUSLY written apology, I believe she will now be looking at Gunther as real, genuine “dating material” for her. Ugh. I had really hoped (and still try to maintain a minuscule sliver of hope) that she and Gunther WILL NOT become a dating couple. To me, even though I know that if Greg does go this Bernice-Gunther route, he will do a good job, to me it will still feel like a letdown. I have been really rooting for Bernice and Piro to explore dating together, for I think Piro is a very interesting character thus far and I would really like to see how Greg further develops him. Furthermore, today’s tome by Bernice, further acerbates my growing worry from yesterday that Quill may show up in the “Talent Show” to “reclaim” Luann’s heart as well. Again, while if Greg chooses to do this, it will be done well….. I just really hope that is not how he chooses to proceed. IMO Luann-Quill & Bernice-Gunther…. seem so disappointing, so I hope it does not come to pass. Bernice-Piro seems interesting and exciting. Luann-Jock seems mildly amusing, Luann being boyfriend free for a while and exploring her own path seems the most exciting and interesting for her to me.In regards to the “Talent Show” sign…. it says “Fuse Follies” above it. I presume this must be what the DeGroots/Gray team are calling the talent show. But, it could also potentially be read as a separate event. But, regardless…. it appears the “Talent Show” is going to occur this July, and when a specific date or month is mentioned, it is seemingly adhered to, so we can anticipate MANY near-future comics being at “The Fuse”. That should be fun.

I don’t understand why anyone would think the “Talent Show” would be cause for Quill to make a re-appearance.Firstly, his focus isacting , which doesn’t really translate well into a “talent” vis-a-vis this type of event. He never showed any propensity for singing or juggling that I can recall.Secondly, he quit the Fuse because of his breakup with Luann. Why on earth would he participate in a talent show there? No, I sense near zero probability that Quill will make an appearance at The Fuse anytime in the near future.

I also don’t see Gunther and Bernice becoming a dating couple. Just because Bernice has accepted that she did a bad thing in using Gunther to further her plots re Piro, doesn’t mean at ALL that she would go further and go on a date. His focus on Bernie is misplaced and needs to be quashed in favor of his learning that affairs of the heart can’t be planned out like his college dreams.

It looks to me like they are growing up a little. I have said for years that the college years are for maturing. The girls seem to be having a decent conversation.

The real proof of them maturing would be if Tiffany came into the fuse and they invited her to sit with them…and were still able to have a decent conversation.

Some here think that Bernie’s response is an indication of budding romantic feeling toward Gunther. I don’ t think so. The giant envelope is just a metaphor for the fact that she’s the analytical type. I think she just wanted to be up front about everything. She’s known Gunther for a long time and values his friendship. But I don’t think her passion for Piro is going away any time soon and the fact that he showed up and seemed to miss her at the film leaves the door open for that conquest to continue on.

it is interesting how the tables are turned. When Luann was in the throws of her problems with Quill, it was Bern who thought she had it all analyzed and figured out.. (turned out she was all wrong about Pru). Now it is Bern having problems with relationships and she’s in foreign territory. People and friendships are not something that she can solve using the scientific method. The panels show her alternately defensive and confused.

Then invent what it actually is within your fiction of the fiction.
