Arlo: Name two CBS News anchors!
Janis: Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather.
Arlo: NBC.
Janis: David Brinkley, Tom Brokaw.
Arlo: ABC.
Janis: Peter Jennings, Barbara Walters.
Arlo: Name one anchor today!
Arlo: No Googling!
No need to remember those today, with their breathless little voices, “I know something you don’t know” attitudes, entertainment oriented, and considerable lack of ethics.
Walter Cronkite had a face that said “Trust me.” Scott Pelley has a face that says “Slap me.” One should never delier the news with a smirk. And you didn’t see Walter, Chet, David, etc., doubling as celebrity interviewers. The beginning of the end was Babba Wawa & Jerry Rivers (yes, that’s Geraldo’s real name)
And ads for the upcoming news program actually gave the story “lead paint linked to brain damage, details at eleven” instead of “you are likely living in a death trap, tune in at six for details”
Classic guys – Howard K. Smith, Robert MacNeil, Jim Lehrer, and my favorite of all, Eric Sevareid. I was little then, but he used to freeze me in my tracks when I saw him on the news. And my all-time TV love, Jessica Savitch.
Cozmik CowboyThe network forced Murrow to do celebrity interviews after the sponsors objected to Harvest of Shame..K MWinchell was not a broadcast journalist, but a Broadway gossip columnist hiding behind Joe McCarthy..whoozissLehrer isn’t much better. The examples I could give of his managing the news when he was News Manager for KERA in Dallas!

@Hank Gillette, I’m 50 and I never saw Chet Huntley (I know the name) but he was gone by the time I started watching the news regularly in the 80s…

I could name Lester Holt, but only because of his local Chicago news connection.
