Why are these detectives so careless? Remember when Tracy went boatriding into unknown territory alone during the night looking for Annie? How stupid was that? Now Pat goes out alone based on something that might not be true. Didn’t tell anyone where he was going or calling for backup. Mike has police experience. He should know police of this caliber would not be so careless.

I have a hard time believing the Chief was this stupid. Not to mention participating in a pay-off with what appears to be few reservations. There has to be a plot twist coming.

Since nobody appears to have mentioned it yet… it appears Dick Tracy’s doing a little cameo in today’s “Phantom” strip.

I can’t believe Rikki can drive that thing through Tracyville’s streets and is not seen. And yes, a well-placed bullet into the exposed hydraulics out to do the trick nicely.

Rikki, obsessed with hatePrepared to hand chief Patton his fateWith no regard to the mayhem she causedShe attacked without a moments pauseDriven by her loyalty and loveShe rejected the concept of being a peace doveInstead her goal was to administer painKnowing Tracy’s anguish would be her gain.

Patton had no reason whatsoever to think Rikki had him in her sights as a “warm up” kill for Tracy. While it is always a good idea to have Tracy in your corner, Pat is painfully aware that his friend is still recovering from an attempt on his life that sent him over the treacherous falls with stab wounds. Let sleeping detectives rest and dream…of Fearless Fosdick. As soon as Rikki appeared in the Vampire Car Pat’s gun was drawn. There’s no action, suspense or fun if all is safe and tidy. Pat was suspicious. He was willing to take a risk to keep his rotten nephew safe. He was not willing to involve a fellow officer in his park rendezvous. Remember when Gould had Tracy jump out of an airplane to see if he could land on the circus tent, thus proving Haf-and-Haf could have survived? More suicidal than smart, but what a great sequence. Good to see Pat Patton off the sidelines and in the thick of it.

Thanks to Vista Bill, Gweedo, Ray Toler, Chris Sherlock, JPuzzlerWhiz, ave09 and Night-Gaunt49 for the kudos. Much appreciated.

If exact police procedure was always followed in fiction, there would be no TV police or detective shows. Heroes always find themselves in danger seemingly too great to surpass. It is the fact that they do overcome these odds that make them heroes.

I note that Chief Patton’s personal sidearm of choice is very Old School, a Police .38 Special revolver, a gun most police forces and other law enforcement agencies have long-since ceased using, in favor of semi-automatics with much higher ammo capacity (commonly, 15-16 rounds to a magazine), such as Glocks, Sig-Sauers, Walthers, and others. What he should realize, even as he empties his cylinder, is that his .38 is not likely to have any significant effect on the heavy armor of the Vampire Car, and that he should be accelerating out of that park as fast as his car will go!Rikki is in a homicidal rage, and if Pat doesn’t flee speedily, her weaponized vehicle will capture his car and not unlikely crush it with him in it!“Oh no! Rikki’s killed Pat!” is a line I don’t want to hear or read!

It’s in the middle panel of the 2nd row (4th or 5th panel depending on if you count the title as a panel). He’s walking what looks to be a young Junior in the airport terminal. You just see the yellow trench coat and hat.Ah…yes, thank you!

This is in response to Ray Toler’s excellent defense of this day’s strip. I’m not replying to him directly because I don’t want a response from him over this, because it’s not pleasant to argue with him. In the over 6 years since this strip Ray has changed to a much nastier person towards this strip and its writer. 3 months ago, during the 2023 Art Dekko story, Ray posted an ugly screed against a certain strip for the lack of shown police procedure (it might even still have happened in-universe, it just wasn’t shown) that he finished by rhetorically accusing Mike of ignorance/incompetence of police procedure. You can read it here (although I don’t know why you’d want to):

    https://www.gocomics.com/dicktracy/2023/02/08

And I look at Ray’s comment here above, and the attitude couldn’t be more opposite of what his is now. It’s as if he’s 2 entirely different people. 2 entirely different people who wouldn’t even like each other. I know there’s one person I’d like more than the other.
