“Diet”? I don’t remember ever seeing Mysta address DS by his first name, unless I’m forgetting something. The first time they met, she called him “Poppa Smith.” After she discovered her true identity, it was “Mr. Smith.” Now she’s using his first name. Apparently her relationship with Diet has evolved from father figure to mentor to friend.
I wonder if Mysta ever gets the urge to buy some cigarettes when she goes out to get her magazines? After all, Mindy frequently smoked, as we’re reminded of in today’s strip. By the way, I love how Staton and Curtis did their homework on this and allude to Mindy’s old habit. Nice detail work, fellas!
As for today’s strip: now, really, what was the point of putting that shocking puss in the middle panel? Joe & Mike trying to scare us? Put me off my midnight snack??
It is always a pleasure to see Mysta. I agree with Frank and others that the Mysta Reborn saga is absolutely captivating. Mysta has said that her first memory is coming to in Dr. Sail’s operating room. She was “reprogrammed” with Mysta Tracy’s personality, which we have seen asserting itself over time. Even after being blindsided by Posie, Mysta feels compassion for him. She was a stranger to herself after the operations. She has since gathered up good memories, especially with her Imoto-Chan, Honeymoon. Diet Smith has been a good friend to Mysta. I’m always curious about the latest R+D at Smith Industries. What’s he building in there?
according to todays strip, she always knew her name was Mindy Ermine, but on Sunday when Posie tells her that her name is Mindy Ermine she gets offensive and says (paraphrasing) I dunno what youre talking about, my name is mysta chimera"
cant have it both ways kids… pick one and stick with it. either she knows or she doesn’t.
Being told by Smith of her name before the memory wipe is not at all the same as thinking of herself as that person. Her name is Mysta Chimera, as she told Posie. She would know nothing of her life before the introduction of Mysta Tracy’s DNA had Smith not kindly told her of her forgotten past.
So it appears to be confirmed that Posie’s “vacation” (mentioned November 9) was his prison term, recently ended. Since Vic showed unexpectedly at the poker game, I guess we are to conclude that his meeting Posie was purely coincidence. In the week between that game and the next one, Posie must have found out about Selfy from his old poker-playing friend and took the opportunity to arrange a meeting with this person who might have some inside information about this “Mysta” person.
Well this does help clear up some of the mystery. I haven’t received the IDW book about the Moon Maid yet (It’s suppose to be in around Dec) and this is where I start loosing information. So I’m looking forward to knowing more about the original Moon Maid.
Guys, im reposting this from Steve Englehart’s post just a few minutes ago on his Facebook page… I thought many of you would find it interesting.
Here’s your first reminder – starting Dec 1, I’ll be posting, for the 15th!! straight year, the story of Rustle’s Christmas Adventure. It’s 25 chapters you can read to your little kids, once a day till Christmas, about a tree who goes on a magical journey with Santa and his elves – with art by the great Joe Staton. You’ll find it on steveenglehart.com starting a week from Thursday.
That last panel was very, very poignant……for he experienced the same feeling those of us who have lost someone to Alzheimer’s feels…..very touching that she was able to see this from his viewpoint as well.
Today’s comments have been rich and far-reaching, and I find very little left to say at this point. Maybe all I can do is admire the striking contrast between Mindy (panel 2) and Mysta (panel 3) with the subtle emphasis provided by the closer view….
I have greatly enjoyed the recent encounters with Mysta, even though I haven’t posted very often. I enjoyed reading today’s comments, too. Many of them have been quite penetrating. Mysta is such an exciting character, and it’s easy to see that a lot of Dick Tracy fans have become deeply invested in her. And why not, she’s fantastic! I know this will not be everyone’s opinion, but it very much feels to me as though Mysta and Honeymoon have become the emotional center of the Dick Tracy universe. So much of the larger, ongoing story revolves around those two characters and the transformations they are experiencing. I certainly don’t mean that as any sort of complaint! Quite the contrary. There are so many wonderful changes taking place with those two, so many character layers to be explored, so many exquisite mysteries still to be fathomed, and best of all, the ladies themselves are simply adorable. Mysta especially fires up my engines. She’s such a beautiful person. Innocent, sexy, powerful, vulnerable, cheerful, thoughtful, loyal, and compassionate. Quite an intoxicating package! Seeing the side by side comparison today between what she used to be versus what she is now, what an astonishing contrast. I literally become giddy inside whenever Mysta is featured. I can tell I am not the only one.

Well, I guess that’s the update on Posie that people were asking for. Now we ought to get back to what’s going on with Selfy.

Whoa. Mindy was one ugly woman. Chester Gould believed in spreading the ugly around; male, female, he didn’t care.

Yes. He often depicted women with prominent incisors showing, giving them a rather animal-like look.

I really like Joe’s portrayal of Mindy. She looks just like the buck-toothed, horse-faced Mindy Gould created.
