Ms. Lopez seems to be making an unwarranted assumption that the thief had a key card. It’s certainly possible that a dorm resident might have let the thief in without knowing that the person was there to steal. For example, it’s not unusual for people to walk into a dorm just by waiting for someone to open the door to leave and going through the door while it’s open. Furthermore, in Piro’s case, he is well-known to some of the dorm residents and someone might have let him in because they recognized him.

If Ms. Lopez is talking about access to the common room rather than to the dorm building, the same principles would apply. A known person would be allowed in even if he wasn’t a dorm resident, and even an unknown person might be allowed in.

Yeah, the thief left behind the cables, the cabinet it sat on, and the couch.

Any chance that whoever took the TV took it out for repairs?

Uh Oh!! She knows of possible evidence—the scarf—but chose not to disclose it. That could be a crime itself, particularly if the supposed scarf was evidence of one. I doubt it was though, getting her off the hook. Why did she do it? Because she wants to protect Piro. Girl is whomped.

@Luann1212: What Bernice did is to withhold possible evidence when she was directly asked if she found anything. I’m not a lawyer, but in Florida, people who deny that they witnessed something and are later found to have lied can sometimes be accused of ‘aiding and abetting’, according to a lot of crime stories in our local news internet webpages…

Bernice is digging a bigger hole she will have to get out of. The presence of the scarf does not automatically implicate Piro. But it does look like somebody might have planted it there to implicate him. Bernice will have to endure some embarrassment as things are sorted out.

Today’s strip just confirms what I’ve been saying all week: Bernice lacks integrity and is unfit to serve in a position of authority over her fellow students.

Sheesh, Bernice, you’re risking expulsion for that lousy mooch Piro. Just give them the scarf and let them deal with it. If Piro took the set you wouldn’t want to date him anyway.

Is it possible Bernice is protecting herself? As in, she’s already removed the scarf. Didn’t tell anyone about it, either. So, now she’s afraid of BIG trouble for it? (and gets in even BIGGER trouble, of course).

@JPuzz: The reality is, with dorms as with apartments, a lot of residents let others if the others say they’ve forgotten their key card or their key doesn’t work, or their roommate has the key or what. And then the resident goes on his or her way, and doesn’t stay around to notice that the person they so kindly let in is actually stealing something from the common room. All who lived in dorms (and folks who live in security door apartments) are always warned not to let in anyone they don’t recognize, but most folks who are trustworthy make the mistake of assuming that everyone else is trustworthy, too.

Bernice: "Evidence? … uh … Look at the wall next to the door! Yeah … The graffiti says, ‘1-19 greg’. (Numbers must be some secret code). And this guy tags things EVERYWHERE! Walls, floors, Ms. Lopez’s in-box, everything! Yup, find this “Greg” guy, and you’ll find who’s REALLY responsible for all this!"

I’m so glad that the new year started with necessary changes to this wonderful comic strip. The first welcome change was making the comic slightly larger without having to click the magnifier. The second change was to hide the comments. Some of you people making comments on this COMIC STRIP are WAAAAY too involved and take this thing too seriously. I sick of people like Brdshht and Jayblue making numerous comments. I think these people need to move on and get a “real” life! IMO, if you make more than one comment, you’re way too involved with something that is not real.

A scarf doesn’t prove anything. So he was watching TV and forgot it when he left. And who says that’s Piro’s scarf? It’s winter. Anyone could have a scarf like that. Besides, isn’t he a student there?

It’s a “common room”. Everyone leaves stuff around from time to time!

Bernice is a criminal. She is purposely hiding what she thinks is evidence of a crime. She is much worse than TJ.

We all know there’s a very “good, simple” explanation for this. Get to it, already!

That’s an unbelievable deviation from her character.

Frank Farkel: You really meant to post your comment to 'Bobbie', and instead, it appeared under my comment. So if you actually want someone to see a comment, you need to not use the 'reply' function. Just use the comment box, and '(name).

@Rimshot: Definitely, the presence of the scarf alone is meaningless, since we’ve already seen at least one student (‘Hair’) who wears them. But we’ve never learned whether Piro is a student there, or just hangs out.

Why is Bernice assuming its a theft? Did she bother to ask if maybe it was removed by someone with the authority to do so? Maybe its being repaired (anybody still do that?) or replaced.

@RICKI1881: There was never a requirement that a reader look at the comments before. If all you wanted was the comic, you were perfectly free to read it and move along. For those of us who enjoyed exchanging ideas, this change reduces the joy, but we’ll survive. I don’t expect that you’re ever going to read this, because it would mean you’re spending too much time here…

Sad to see Bernice succumbing to misplaced loyalty based upon…nothing certain. We know that those scarves are everywhere and have no idea of its involvement if any. Yet she has gone to that extra length. She is smitten and as I have experienced, it affects the mind in bad ways. Hers is functioning badly at this point. She is acting in a very human way.

There’s no security cameras? Anytime I go down the street , I figure it’s under surveillance.

Bernice is making this even harder on herself. I do not know if the scarf would be appropriate to be considered “evidence” though. Common rooms have all sorts of stuff left around. With this being Bernice’s FIRST time checking the room, she has no prior knowledge on the time the scarf has been there. It could be from way back in September even.

That makes Bernice an accomplice after the fact

Even if she were to come clean about the scarf (as evidence) and Piro is revealed as a P.O.I., there would be further questions about why Piro was there in the first place and why he kept making "appearances, there. She’d lose the R.A. job, and risk explusion from the Univ. For now, I think she’d better “go with it” and hope nobody ties her to Piro (like, maybe, “Tiff”)….

@BJSHIPLEY1: Since a lot of people who pointed out the fact that the supervisor had already said the TV wasn’t being repaired made their remarks as ‘replies’, and since someone has to click on all the replies to see what’s said, it is increasingly the case that people will repeat something that’s already been resolved. This may serve to either increase comments, or disappoint some posters enough that they will stop posting. Maybe that’s what GoComics wants?

I suspect that Piro SAW the theft, and followed the thief. In his haste, his scarf was left behind.

Methinks the newbie RA doth protest too much (and too fast).

The “thief” could have walked in behind someone with a key card. It’s called tailgaiting. Unless there is a guard monitoring the door, in person or remotely, there’s no way to stop someone from doing that. You would think with all that security there’d be some cameras and video footage to review.

Dez .. Step up. Share what you know with the Dorm Manage. (I have a crush on Dez .. I cleared it first with my wife.)

Not to worry. Wednesday or Thursday usually have the most dramatic elements of a story arc in this strip. Saturday’s finale usually makes all the dramatic buildup go away. We’ll have to see if that happens this time. Bern could be getting into deep trouble as her lie is exposed, or the whole incident might just end.
