Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for January 23, 2017
Transcript:
Man: Mr. President, now that you're in office, this is a great opportunity to set forth your policy priorities. Rat: Right. I've put them all in here. Man: But this is just filled with people's names. Rat: Right. They're my enemies. Crushing them will be my priority. Man: I hoped for so much more. Rat: Oh, we can add to it as we go.

I wonder if Goat is on the list.

âWhen you say crushing them, do you mean verbally, emotionally, financially, physically?âŠâ
âYes.â
Robin Harwood about 8 years ago
A good start. Better than bombing the rest of the world to rubble, which seems to be the most common presidential policy.
railwayman001 about 8 years ago
His âenemiesâ are the majority of principled conservatives, Republicans (including politicians, officials, and voters), and especially Americans who didnât vote for him.
Wilde Bill about 8 years ago
âOh, that âHopeâ thing is soooo last administration!â
davidweinstock about 8 years ago
someone should smack the lazy non voting eligibles up the head and not let them join protests until after they vote in an election

Nixon at least waited 3 years before compiling his first enemies list âŠ

Heâs been in office 3 days and still tornadoes hit the south. When is he gonna stop them?

May the power of the Croc be with you :-)
Brass Orchid Premium Member about 8 years ago
Why not? He seems to be on a lot of enemy lists himself.
As long as he doesnât subvert the power of the DOJ or IRS, of course.
That would just be wrong, for most people.
The Fly Hunter about 8 years ago
SooooooâŠ.. Rat is the reincarnation of Richard Nixon thenâŠ..

Didnât South Park already do this?

Yes, itâs very reminiscent of the crook who said âI am not a crook.â
âYour reporters just canât stand the fact that I am in this office. They have opposed me for 25 years.â â Richard Nixon
â[Television networks] are âanti-Nixonâ and âtheyâre going to have to pay for that sooner or later.â â Ron Zeigler, Nixonâs press secretary.
âThe [Washington] Post is going to have damnable, damnable problems out of this one. They have a television station . . . and theyâre going to have to get it renewed. There ainât going to be no forgetting and thereâll be goddamn little forgiving.â â NixonâWe will bring you to our kneesâŠWeâll break your network.â â Chuck Colson (Special Counsel to Nixon) to Frank Stanton (President of CBS)

In at least one of his Pearls treasuries, Pastis commented that he preferred to stay away from political humor in general. Maybe heâs changed his mind. His strip and he can do what he wants, but I donât think heâs doing it well. Itâs not just that I (apparently) disagree with him about President Trump, either. Berk Breathed has been slamming him on his revived Bloom County strip, but heâs actually funny.

âHow many people are on this list, Mr. President.ââTen Billion. And donât believe the media that there tells you otherwise.â
Tim Gaffney about 8 years ago
Get off the Political liberal band wagon and go back to funny strips.

Omarosa: Trump already has an enemies list. Omarosa Manigault, a former contestant on The Apprentice, and Donald Trump advocate, says those who vote against Trump will be placed on a special âlist.âNov 8, 2016

Where do Goat, Toon Boy and the Comic Censor fall on his list?
grainpaw about 8 years ago
Blessed are those with low expectations, for they shall not be disappointed.
Sherlock Watson about 8 years ago
He was also going to bring a list of his friends, but he dropped it in a pile of confetti and he canât figure out which piece it is.
PS: Flag the trolls.
Number Three about 8 years ago
There some people who I wouldnât mind crushing.
Commenters who bang on about Trump on non-political strips for a start.

Since the term âalternative factsâ means nothing more and nothing less than âliesâ, if Rat had âalternative enemiesâ would they be his friends?
Machtyn about 8 years ago
Sounds like Obamaâs first days in office. (yeah, yeah, I know this is directed at Trump. I donât disagree with the sentiment, either. Just reminding everybody that Trump saw what Obama did and wants more of it â unfettered power.)
K M about 8 years ago
Weâll see. I see someone else has already noted that Obama took pages from Nixonâs playbook while he was supposed to preside over the government.

OMG! How funny can a comic get!!
The Moose Group about 8 years ago
I sincerely hope Pastis doesnât go the way of Trudeauâs Doonesbury. What was once a funny and witty take on the political scene in general became a mean-spirited daily attack cartoon that just wasnât even amusing. It was sad to see.
Sisyphos about 8 years ago
Rat is funny. Good thing heâs not really our president, thoughâŠ.
Spade Jr. about 8 years ago
Pastis (and other morons who donât get it): Youâve lost another customer (reader), and frankly, I hope you lose many more. The reason I have always like Pearls Before Swine is because of its lack of politics (left, right, ANY KIND). Take your strip to a political page section or anywhere other than âthe funnies.â I gave you two shots over the last couple months but todayâs was the third strike. You, sir, are OUT!
Imagonnadie about 8 years ago
Mr. Pastis, could you give us some idea how long you will be doing political comics? Your political comedy isnât unique; where as, your regular comedy was. Also, your political comedy is average at best. There are plenty of average comics, and, comics I havenât looked at. If you could give us some idea how long you will be wasting your time with this, I can take that time to look for above average and better comics.

Wonder what you would have made of that OTHER famous talking-animal strip, the legendary âPogoââŠâŠâŠ
