Wow triple poof today :) My boys were out on the back deck this evening when the ginger “visitor” came up to see them. Surprisingly no poufing occurred even though they usually glare at the cat through the window.
Once again, I find that I prefer the original version of this comic. While I understand, to an extent, that the idea is to bring new readers into the fold with the strip’s concepts and the characters’ behaviors, I didn’t need “Poof” spelled out for me in the original strip to know that that was what was going on. Panel 4, with Lupin and Puck at the desk, was much more effective as a completely silent panel. Also, I prefer Tommy’s simple "Hi’ and “Hello” and “Let me in” without exclamation marks after everything. It’s a little over-enthusiastic, and somehow it also messes with the charming understated mechanics of the humor, stomping on it with a bit too much exuberance. I know Tommy is a happy, friendly cat — but please don’t couch everything he says in exclamation marks. Finally, the “Live” here is a bit overdone, being used three times, as if it’s trying too often to remind new readers that this is supposed to be a news broadcast. Are newspaper readers that dense that they need all of these training wheels? Otherwise, I love that Tommy is getting a proper introduction here and I’m sure that new readers will grow to love Tommy, as us old-timers have. Looking forward to new adventures with him!
