It’s been said that it’s impossible to write a parody of certain behaviors. A parody usually gets its power from exaggerating some aspect of the behavior. If the behavior is extreme enough, the parody looks like simple reportage. This week we had the spectacle of Trump releasing the video of him ‘wrestling" with a figure representing a news network. Rat’s behavior here is not so much parody as imitation. Is imitation the sincerest form of parody?

i lean to the right and i dont care that pastis leans to the left. funny is funny and the president is a puppet no matter who he is. the president is pretty much there for ridicule. the last one was a test of our racial bias, this one is a reprieve where we continue to miss whats going on on capitol-hill because we’re all watching him say nonsequitors for 4 years

I don’t agree with the fuzzy math used at the outset. Let’s say from the get-go that Pastis is known to have a liberal outlook. Wouldn’t that affect his readership to begin with? Suppose 25% of his readers are conservative, and half of those readers are offended. I think Pastis can afford to tick off 12.5% of his readers from time to time.

Pastis has offended a lot of readers in the past. Why would he stop now? The strips that a lot of people find funny are the same ones that some will be offended at.

Here’s a thought. If in PBS world, President Rat represents President Trump (when Pastis isn’t just ignoring Rat’s presidency) then who was the PBS version of Clinton? And would we really want a President Pigita? Although Patty the Croc might have been interesting. Not a lot of female Pearls characters to pick from.

I’d take the Trump complainers more seriously if they had also been complaining about Obama. “Trump’s a big fat liar!” Okay, so Obama isn’t fat, but he’s just as much a liar. “Trump’s a bully!” Yep, Obama was, too. “Trump is doing unconstitutional things!” Obama had performed a number of impeachable actions. “Trump has too much power!” Then why didn’t you complain when Obama gave the Office of the President that much power or call him out when he abused the power of the office?

Faxon, you don’t need to be a “leftist” to enjoy mocking the current US “president”. You just need a brain and minimal standards of decent behavior. Many conservatives also despise him, and the number is growing. Even many of those who support him for their own political benefit or the benefit of right wing policies are disturbed by much of his behavior. Those dedicated fans of his that are likely to be offended by this (and they like to call other people “snowflakes”!) don’t make up anywhere close to half of the US population, so they aren’t likely to be anywhere near half Pastis’s readership. Even a third would be stretching it. And if I were Pastis, I wouldn’t grieve too much at losing readers who haven’t got the brains to realize what a utter disgrace the person being mocked here is. They probably don’t get half his jokes anyway, so they’re no big loss.
