I want to get in on the comments early tonight to let everyone know that this is a real song my Mom used to sing to our cat Ivannah, when I was a kid. Ivannah was a mostly black cat, with a few white patches, who adored laundry basket rides. She would jump right in and liked to be carried all over the house. I wanted to somehow work this little song in, and I thought Puck would probably enjoy it the most. :)
Yang was too big to carry around in the laundry basket, but he once jumped into the hamper and the lid closed on him, and he quickly realized that there was no reason to kick up a fuss about it since he was just going to sleep in the clothes anyway.
I once had a cat who liked to hide. One morning she hid in the linen closet and off I went to work. When I got home I heard muffled mews and yowls. When I opened the linen closet door, the entire contents of all the shelves cascaded out on top of me. She had spent the day climbing and shoving to try to get out. Definitely a Fibber McGee (old enough to remember him?) moment. At least it wasn’t the canned goods pantry!
Awww, this is perfect!! We do the same with our Dusty. He loves laundry day and follows us all over the house waiting for his rides! he gets one on each empty trip. lol.
My friend’s two Siamese cats, Samantha and Sarah, loved to jump into the empty laundry basket and get spun round and round until they were so dizzy that when they jumped out they would walk around reeling like they were drunk. Then they’d jump back in for another spin.
I was in an apartment complex and the laundry room was around the corner. Between me and the laundry was a lady with two cats, one light and one black. If I was carrying a white wash, inevitably the black cat would show up and demand attention. And, of course, the light cat came out for the dark wash.
I sing when I sew; the cats retreat to other places in the house because you HAVE to play Steppenwolfs’ Get Your Motor Running really, really loudly. I tone it down a tad for my Beach Boys and other oldies, though.
I lost my “Puck” 6 months ago after 20 years. He was jet black and 20 lbs of purr. We almost named him Harley because of the loud purr. He loved to be carried around, I miss him so much. So thanks for the strip as I can see so much of my old friend in Puck.
My Po loves to jump into the laundry basket after it’s empty and I get to carry the basket (with him in it) to where we keep the basket. He loves to ride the basket!
One of our cats when I was young, Myshkin aka “The Beast” (okay, he was a bit of an idiot, too) could usually be found in one of two places depending on the weather. He’d either be sleeping in the linen closet or sleeping upside down in a window sill. We knew to never fully close the linen closet door.
I had a cat that loved the smell of bleached laundry – so I let him enjoy it. It was all socks and underwear so it was no biggie that it was wrinkled. But that cat didn’t care for the other laundry, just the bleached stuff. All animals have some quirk. lol
I had a couple of cats who loved to get rides in the laundry basket. I didn’t sing, but I made a “helicopter” noise and would swoop it up and down and around the house. We called the rides “helicopter kitty”, and when I said that they knew just what I meant.
I sing to my cats all the time, sometimes just tunes I know, but with the lyrics changed to fit their names or the situation, but more often nonsense ones of my own creation, like the Pouncey-boo Jangles song. They seem to like it, or at least tolerate it, but Pounce gets really weirded out if I whistle. He tries to cover my mouth with his paw. He’s also the one who enjoys a basket of fresh laundry, though not for rides.
SO glad I’m not the only one who sings to her cat. Two of mine:
Itsy bitsy kittySweet petit ma belleCuddly and so kissyMama’s little girl.Oh so silky fur and Such a curly tail andThat’s my itty bittyMy Twilight Louise
(Why yes, I was reading Carole Nelson Douglas when she adopted me.)
This one needs a heavy metal throaty voice:
Got a kissyFrom my kittyGot a kissy from my kitty oh so prettyGot a cuddleFrom my bunnyGot a cuddle from my bunny she’s my hunny.
I have to separate my girls for chow because one would be overly “fluffy” otherwise. And sometimes Angel is in her kitty bed . . . I just pick up the kitty bed and give her a ride out of the room, which she quite likes. I guess now I’ll have to sing to her!
Ok, so, when I first wrote Mom’s song for Ivannah into the comic I was not certain how this strip would go over. I knew it was special for me and her and hoped folks out there would enjoy it—but I didn’t realize how special singing fun little made up songs to our cats is for MANY of us! I am beyond delighted with all the fun stories and comments today! I’m so happy everyone likes Pucky’s City! :D (I swear, it’s ALWAYS the strips I worry about that get the best responses. A couple of years back I was very anxious that Tabitha’s ‘red dot speech’ would not go over well, if you can believe it! …Long time readers know what I mean, new readers—SOON!) I hope everyone had a great Friday, and that we’re all singing to our cats with a bit more confidence tonight that we are not alone, haha!
I have songs for all my cats and dogs (all rescues) for special things, Like " It’s time for Nummy Noms" which calls them to wet food (to the tune of It’s Howdy Doodie Time….before my time, but it fit lol) and then I have One song that Lists everyone’s name in the order they joined the Family (to Mamma Mia) then individual cats and dogs have their own songs. I song alot, and I am glad I am not the only one. Thank you. BTW will Beatrice get her picture in your " Folks in the news" section; also her Woman the Book Store owner? I loved Elvis’s “Proud Parent of a Book Store Cat” shirt! This is one of my Favorite Comics. And thank you for promoting Spay Neuter, and Adopt Don’t Shop!!!

A city of towels, eh. If Mary Worth was here, she could’ve folded all of ’em into interesting kitty kat shapes…

One time I was whistling a tune and Onyx had never heard whistling before. She followed the sound, came close to my mouth… And bit my lips.
