Yeah Jef, I get the teach is a dinosaur and the kid is superior; it used to be funny the way you had them play off each other. But now you are flogging her with his âsuperiorâ wit.
I hope Mallett is aiming for a major âcomeuppanceâ event where Mrs. Olsen pops Caulfieldâs arrogance with newly gained knowledge of tech stuff.
Otherwise, Caulfield will continue to refine his gradual transformation into a common and very ordinary classroom frustration.
The difference between todayâs classroom and the one I in which I practiced for the last 3 decades of the 20th is that while students âslighted offâ my years of experience and observation as not relevant to their very âtodayâ lives, they were not so arrogant at to parade that disrespect so openly. That arrogance seems to be â la mode de rigueur,â for current classrooms, where even pretended respect is not among the virtues.
FWIT â Assigning book reports is no longer considered âgood teachingâ, simply because of how easy it is to download anything and everything about any book. The new-and-improved methodology is for a student to write personal reflections, reactions, and the like. Perhaps Mallett is showing more of Ms Oâs ludditeness. But yes, I agree, I donât like the outright disrespect weâre seeing in Caulfield in recent times.
At this point, the author really needs to update his bio to remove the fact that heâs often praised for his âgentle spiritâ because⊠well, havenât been seeing it so much of late. Now itâs all about elitism and making fun of the âfat old dinosaurs.â
Now he is underestimating her. Lao Tzu would not approve. He is slumming now. He will crash and burn from that bit of lazy hubris even if he did the report.
âWhat you donât know wonât hurt youâ has to be one of the dumbest proverbs ever, but âwhat other people donât know makes good comedyâ is really useful. Maybe. Maybe itâs so obvious that itâs not at all useful as a proverb. I donât know. Ooh. That hurts.
Caulfield is neither clever nor funny. This strip could use a lot less of him. When one character starts to dominate an ensemble cast, itâs usually not good. Might as well just rename the strip âCaulfield.â

Actual teachers, of course, can spot student BS a mile away.

I think Iâm gonna name my dog âJetnetâ; that way itâll seem more reasonable when I say he ate my homework.
