Bratty Michael is lucky he didn’t have someone like me that he yawped at that way. He’d be wearing whatever is on that plate, and headed out the door…

All Patterson women wore their hair long and only April had bangs. I suspect Lynn preferred long hair because it’s easier to draw than stylish hair. I imagine Candace’s hair was the hardest to draw.

A ponytail is hippie? I usually think of it as a 1950s style. Considering that Michael was supposed to be born in 1976 (the age of disco), I can see how he might not know any better. He would have seen old pictures of Elly wearing the same hair style, but would he know enough about hippies to associate a ponytail with that movement? The hippie girls I remember wore their hair long, natural, straight, and unbrushed.

Long hair looks good. When an older woman decides to cut and wear her hair shorter to make it easier to deal with, she often appears to gain several years in age. Others Like Goldie Hawn always kept her hair as she did when younger, and people are always remarking at how goo she looks for her age. When Sharon Stone cut hers, she looked 10 years older to me overnight. If you want to keep your youthful looks, skip facelifts but take care of the hair.

Michael shouldn’t talk about hair with his early onset receding hairline.

I think it’s time for Ellie to set the tray down, excuse herself, and go take a long walk. The steam is coming out of my ears just hearing all this second hand. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

    Lynn’s Notes:

In a TV sit-com, you can get away with changing a character with a haircut or a hair colour because the character is a real person. In a comic strip, the art often reflects an artist’s style to the point where hair, posture, and even clothing are used to clearly identify the character. Charles Schulz once told me, “If it wasn’t for hair and clothing, all my characters would look alike!” He drew them all in his own unique style.

Michael must be losing his touch-after all he did make that crack about 9 months in a tub after his mom yelled at him for staying in the bath overly long and that was not sotto voce as the current comment may have been.

Hair is hair is hair! Wear it how YOU feel comfortable and hang what anyone else thinks. I always had the long hair and Farrah Fawcett waves but styles change and so did I. I think I’d look strange with that hair now. I much prefer my short pixie cut and so does my husband. I look like a fierce elf ready for battle!

I find Mike’s remark about his mother, a joke, of course, but a very adult joke….he’s kind of young for a remark like that.

I wore my hair long and straight for many years. When I got it cut short a few years ago, I discovered I actually have some natural curl. It took almost 60 years for me to figure that out.

When I was a teen, I told my mother’s best friend that her bathing suit looked better on the bed than on her! I still cringe at the thought of the lecture in manners II got when we got home!!

When it was originally published in 1989 Mike’s panel 1 word balloon included the phrase “in the 60’s.” I guess someone in the syndicate has decided they are pretending that these strips are happening in our present time of 2018 and removed it. I guess Elly wasn’t born yet in the 60s, and she was part of the 1990s hippie scene.
