well, at least I have still have that rocking chair through which I stuck my head when about four years of age (had someone use a circular saw to liberate me by cutting off a round piece that connected the sitting area to the back rest)
OMG – Gunther was even more stuck on Mom and his childhood home than we thought. However the biggest clue was a while ago when Gunther went running home from Peru so that he wouldn’t lose his Mom to a boyfriend. But now (drum roll) her majesty Tiffany is likely to enter the scene. It would be real tough on Gunther if Tiffany starts spending time with Les there. Maybe Rosa could show up to save the day.
Like mother, like son, until Les came along and gave him an insight he needs. And please stop with Rosa coming back. She is not. She was never right for Gunther which is why she was written out. Someone else will show up and be the right girl for him.
Looks like les lacks any form of sentiment. Probably because he doesn’t like showing emotions around others and he sees sentiment as a form of emotion.
common Gunther, its time to let those g’nads drop. Don’t be bullied. Keep a couple items that have real sentimental value to you, but don’t try to recreate your childhood ala Norman Bates at the “Bates Motel”…(Alfred Hitchcock, PSYCHO for those too young to remember…hell, just Google it); I’m afraid Les might grow to like it..
Les is pressing all the right buttons! I liked it when he told Gunther that its time to grow out of it. He’s right on with that assesment. Only thing is I guess they’re going to have to ask uncle Hitch for money to buy the furniture with. Mmm….
@Sjahapamama: Gunther tried to get with Bernice a while back, when he was tutoring Tiffany and explaining about his life plan (marrying someone booksmart like him, being an engineer, living in a house with a granny flat for his mother for when he and wife needed a babysitter.) At that point he asked Bernice out (twice), but all she wanted to do was talk to him about Piro…
I feel like I’ve seen this situation before. If it’s anything like the dealings of TJ and Brad, Gunther is already destined to lose. How does Les even work for TJ?? He’s like the mastermind of manipulation. I mean he was good enough to face Ann Eyefull and win… jr here is just beginning. He’s got big shoes to fill, but yeah, sorry Gunth :(
I hate to agree with Les, but he is right on target. Gunther is a sentimental guy -and this is something I understand very well. It comes from having a close relationship with family or a family member. Ours was a close family (and a fairly good sized one -I even knew my great grandparents). Letting go can be difficult.
Gunther, just pick a few small things that don’t take up space but have great memories. And then take photos of the other stuff for your memories. I mean, what bachelor wants his high chair? Really? —-I can see taking a lamp. That could be interesting in a bachelor pad. A high chair? Not.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
Weeeelllll… Let’s review the bidding, as they say in Bridge:
Leslie is the product of, and deeply influenced by, his con artist family (mother and uncle Al). He enabled Tiffany (the list) and played a game called “Let’s You and Her Fight” (Ann and Tiffany) when he thought he might gain revenge on his mother. Then he dropped Tiff like the proverbial hot potato when his desired result didn’t happen.
Most likely, he’s still running a con on Gunther to get his way. His idea of bachelorhood is a pretty far cry from Gunther’s; given the two characters as presented to this point.
IF Gunther divests himself of the last vestiges of the apron strings (the furniture), both physically and emotionally, only then will the con provide a positive result though unintended by Les.
OMG! Les actually helping Gunther mature??? I believe Hades got a tad chillier, this morning! Now, I want to see where this goes. Gunth, go with this… just don’t let Les take you off the deep end.
IMHO. Gunther is by far the most interesting character developed by Greg, and now extended through GnK. And! I don’t think they really know what to do with him. He has had a flirtatious involvement with and was rejected by, almost every major contemporary female in the strip: Luann, Bernice, Tiffany, Rosa, and probably some I’m not recalling at the present. They tried him with The All American girl, fellow nerdish brainiac, a femme fatale and even a moonstruck, but shallow, exchange student, respectively. Nobody stuck. So, the 800 lb gorilla in the room is “Whither Gunther?” Where are GnK going with the character???
He appeared on a trajectory to become what was once known as the “Dutiful Son.” Staying at home to take care of his widowed mother. But mom “fooled around and fell in love,” changing that script. At the present he seems lined up to play the role of “Old Maid Bachelor.” A Mr. Fogerty-type maybe marrying a “Miss Phelps” after retirement; as apparently already happened.
He has been treated shabbily by most of the female characters also. Especially, the (expletive deleted) Rosa – lured off to Peru then dumped in the middle of the Jungle! Bringing her back would be the biggest cop out and injustice in Toontown since Roger Rabbit was framed!
Luann fans keep waiting for GnK to make a move, but it seems “Gunther” is doomed to a life of serial disappointments. Rejection by any and all female interests and the butt of jokes by males. So until I see different, that’s where I think GnK are positioning Gunther. That’s his “place” in the strip forever.
I saw the antique couch they unloaded from the truck. I would pay enough for that that they could buy IKEA crap and have generic, boring interior decoration? with stuff that looks like it was built in a high school wood shop. Just don’t invite me over, I get nauseous just looking at it.
Just looking at the furniture we can see in this strip, I’d keep the standing lamp (buying a new shade), the dresser (removing the mirror) and the chest of drawers. Having had cheap dressers that broke the second anything heavy was put in them I appreciate genuine wood.
They had better sell all that furniture before Mrs. Gray returns from the honeymoon, or else she will want to take it all back. (Starting with the high chair!)
This is why Gunther gets bullied and picked on. He practically begs people to walk on him. Les is doing him a favor by being tough on him. Gunther needs a strong male influence in his life
Be smart Gunther. Check with your mom first. Make sure it was a gift, not a loan. If it is yours to sell get it appraised first to see what it’s value really is. Then you can make an intelligent decision on about it. Don’t let a selfish person emotionally pressure you into something you will probably regret.
Leslie states things crudely and even cruelly, but he is right! It is time for Gunther to grow up and grow a pair, and it looks like just maybe that reality may be dawning on him….

And as expected, Gunther rolls over for Les Knox. What a “Surprise!” (Rolls Eyes)
But Les is right about one thing. It’s “Buh-Bye” for Gunther alright.
Buh-Bye – Furniture.
Buh-Bye – Money for it.
Buh-Bye – Freedom.
Buh-Bye – Self-Respect.
Buh-Bye – Privacy.
Buh-Bye – Dignity.
And Coming Soon,
Buh-Bye – Tiffany.
Too bad Gunther. You had a lot of potential when you first came back from Peru. Now squandered.
Oh well. There’s always Jack, I guess…….,
