She said âIâm going out with my girlfriends For margaritas at the Holiday Innâ Oh have mercy⌠my only thought Was tequila makes her clothes fall off
First of all, what we have here is a fantasy. The scene is from Mademoiselle de Maupin, a novel by ThĂŠophile Gautier. The young man dreams of meeting the perfect embodiment of feminine beauty; this scene is his vision of the woman of his dreams.
But it gets better. I wonder if Steve Melcher knows what a treasure heâs unearthed here?
The real Mademoiselle de Maupin was Julie dâAubigny, a 17th-century French actress, singer, and swordswomanâyou read that right, swordswoman. Not your normal occupation for a woman in the 17th century. Her father was responsible for training the court pages, training that included fencing, and Julie trained right along with the boys. She later went on the lam with another fencing master who got in trouble with the law by killing a guy in a duel; the two made their living by giving fencing exhibitions and by her singingâshe later sang with the Paris Opera and other professional opera companies. Over her lifetime, she was regularly involved in duels, regularly involved in sexual scandals, and regularly involved with the high and mighty in the bedchamber; at one point she was the mistress of Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria.
These are just a few of the highlights of her story. Thereâs lots more at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_d%27Aubigny. As far as I know, the painting is now in a private collection (see https://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=21674).
all have (the second extensive) info about this artist, perhaps in addition to whatâs pointed to by the first URL. This is the first work by him used here.
