I had never heard that, it was always “The Cocaine Cowboys”.When the old stadium in Irving was demolished, there was a huge cloud of white dust, and it was NOT all from the construction debris.
Tom Landry Roger Staubach days. NFL Films used the term on one of their year-end recap films, probably still plays on the NFL Network every now and then. Those were great films for each team, slow-mo film highlights, the grand music and that narrator they had. The name stuck.
I’ve been a Cowboys fan since then – a lot of lean years; but as a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, I can take it. Maybe this is the year for them both (is that laughter I hear?).
the hype and coverage of Dallas goes way beyond simply coverage of just one of 32 teams……
an example last week in the rundown on the early games last Sunday, the commentators spent more time scrutinizing (seemingly)every play of the Cowboys’ game and skipping over replays of crucial touchdowns and coverage of the other teams.
they are NOT America’s team. but the NFL network thinks so
I never really have followed the NFL much but I knew enough that I would favor anyone over the Dallas Cowboys (Steelers over Cowboys in the SB is a good example). In other words, as long as Dallas would lose I would be happy. Kind of like Washington Redskins vs. Miami Dolphins in the SB (whatever year that was, c. 1970?) – Dolphins favored specifically because Nixon announced that he was rooting for the Redskins.
Yea, but there is no better chop bustin’ than using the “America’s Team” moniker. Been a fan since childhood (Even remember Dandy Don Meredith as QB and the Dallas Texans – aka Chiefs today). Lost lots of the love when Jones sacked Landry in such a disrespectful way. BUT, even with all that – no longer a rabid fan – IT is IMMENSELY enjoyable chop-busting to use the moniker and see the hate well up in 90+% of NFL fans. Oh, its just lovely. You can almost hear those sphincters puckering up!

That was when I really started hating the Cowboys, and I haven’t changed my mind since.

I remember when they were called South America’s Team, due to all the players caught with cocaine!

If Dallas is called “America’s Team” it’s only because sportscasters are incredibly lazy and will use any cliché, no matter how outdated.

I have been questioning that moniker for years.

The “America’s Team” appellation was in vogue in the seventies. Unfortunately, they often got whupped by “Pittsburgh’s Team”.

Nick, don’t try to appear so young. You and Kate were doing Second Chances back when the Cowboys were collecting Super Bowl rings.
