“Well, Mike, believe me, I calculated the odds of this succeeding against the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid… and I went ahead anyway.”
When I was a pilot, I lived by the following motto: “Flying is a calculated risk. Do it often enough, and eventually it will kill you. The objective is to stack the odds so much in your favor that something else, preferably old age, will kill you first.”
Apparently the difference between calculus and statistics isn’t Wiley Miller’s strong point, which is why the joke comes up lame. Is there a joke therapist in the house?
Seems in scenes such as this one, all Wiley’s participants are well along in age. Curious, given the variety of really foolish ways people of all ages reach this point nowadays.
