The sad thing in the background here is, Marigold may never realize just how insignificant she really is in this unimaginably immense universe that seem to go on forever. I don’t think she could live with that fact if she did learn it. It’s the exact opposite of everything she believes. Ignorance CAN be bliss at times.

Can’t you see it, Phoebe? All this infinite universe, all these gigantic planets , only beeing there for contemplating one magnificent UNICORN?

Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

Perspective is a very difficult concept when one’s a narcissist, since perspective requires looking at things from (at least) two places.

I remember when this hit me between the eyes: We’d been driving parallel(ish) to a range of mountains with a major peak that stayed more or less at the same angle for quite some time. Then the car passed “behind” a local hill which partly blocked the view of the mountains, and you could see how the hill’s angle moved fast while the mountains’ angle move slow… and suddenly there was a picture in my mind of how the subtended angle for a given length was different for how far away that length was, and the clear white light of reason shone down and all was very well. And then my little brother said “When are we going to get there?!” and the world resumed normalcy.

Lovecraft used that feeling of being motes in the sea of infinity in his writings and general personal philosophy.

Reality is what you believe to be so.
