My great-grandmother claimed that the secret to a long life was to sprinkle a pinch of gun powder on oneās oatmeal every morning. She did this religiously until she died at the age of 103. She left behind 10 children, 45 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, and a 40-foot hole where the crematorium used to be.
Thereās been some decently heavy subject matter in Pickles of late. I like it. I hope the author/artist continues to let us have sweet āawwwā moments with these characters we have come to love so much.
There are states and other countries where you do have the option of checking out when you choose- not waiting in pain and using up money that could be used for those who still have productive lives to live. Or, you can just take a handful of sleeping pills. I agree that I intend to want to as long as I live.
I have NEVER understood the religious stricture against suicide ā it makes no sense whatsoever, unless the āgodā referenced in the literature is heavily into āS & Mā, then it make at least a little sense.
When I was Nelsonās age, it was incomprehensible not to want to live forever; now that Iām Earlās age and everything hurts all the time, it makes perfect sense to check out!
Well, you might ask, why donāt you?
Simple, really. Iāve turned into an ornery old ācussā and Iāll be danged if Iāll give that many people pleasure ā so there!
I think the real beauty of this cartoon is the last line. I think all senior citizens (and perhaps some younger) fear continuing to live long past our desire to do so and becoming a burden to our children while destroying our life savings we may have hoped to leave to our children. May all of us die peacefully when we are ready to goā¦
By the way, while I donāt want anyone hurting self, I believe personal freedom requires all be allowed to terminate their lives. There are many who believe correctly that they could reduce suicides by keeping guns away from potentially suicidal people. To me the real problem is when they decide to kill others first.

I had hoped my maternal grandfather would live to be 100 (in 2011); he only made it to 96.

There is a very good message here.
