Seems to me the last panel should have been an unrelenting darkness. If there is no source of light beyond the universe, it would be nothing but darkness.

The universe expands as light reaches and creates where it didn’t exist before. Once you can see it, it’s inside.

Our newspaper displayed the last panel with the wizard as the above strip depicts; however, the background isn’t blank but shows a black & white checkerboard …

The one printed in my local paper had a checkerboard background in the last panel. It made no sense to me.
