True story. Three of us are riding in a car ad one says that she’d had an ‘STD’ when she was younger. The driver asked ’what’s an STD.’ I pipe in. ‘So, The Drama!’
One of my favorite acronyms is “LSMFT”. You probably have to be 60+ to know its original meaning. Long time ago I told a woman friend it stands for, “Less Silicone Means Flat Tatas!” She shot back, “Lotsa Saltpeter Means Flat Testicles!” Fortunately we’re still fiends!
Once, after realizing AMA referred to either the American Medical Association or American Motorcyclist Association (you may guess which I belonged to) I started making a list of alternative abbreviations. I gave up when the list became totally unwieldy. (my favorite – for AMA – is Academy of Model Aeronautics)
With the massive amount of stuff with acronyms, not to mention the abbreviations from texting/Twittering, I rarely find less than 10 means for every acronym I Google. Seeming simplification is just another compliction.
As a member of S.A.F.E. (Save Acronyms From Extinction), I must point out that neither O.C.D. nor S.T.D. are acronyms. They are abbreviations at best. An acronym consists of initials that in some way form a real or made-up word that one can say e.g. MADD, NASA, DAMM (Drunks against mad mothers.) Please, Stephan, SAVE (Stop Abusing Vocal Expressions) us.
Most adults who speak English know at least 20,000 words. Use them in three word combinations and toss out 99% of all the possible combos as being senseless, and you get 80 billion three-word phrases that might reasonably be abbreviated as a three letter acronym (TLA is self referential). There are, however only 26 letters, so the total number of distinct TLAs is 17,576 which comes to something like 4 million meanings for each possible TLA.
It comes as no surprise that Goat has been diagnosed with OCD. As for Pig, he needs to check out Urban Dictionary on his computer, and then see a psychiatrist specializing in naive pigs….

OCD actually can lead to weight problems. Think of the old “betcha can’t eat just one” ad campaigns.
