The question for me is: Are the visiting women more horrified by Michael’s burp or more horrified by Elly’s screaming lecture after the burp? It could be a close call.
Belches past age 4 are no longer cute. It runs along the same logic as number of teeth. Two teeth under the age of one=cute. Two teeth over the age of 50=disturbing.
Good heavens Lynn has a talent for drawing mawkish, goon-like background characters. Look at that bucktoothed, cross-eyed potato sack of a woman there!
It’s fascinating how Lynn was able to “keep up” with the aging of the kids, though- though there haven’t been any “short one day; tall the next” strips, now I realize Mike is taller than most female adults.
Sometimes the truth hurts. By the way, nice subtle deference to that inconvenient truth via the depiction of the visitors as somewhat creepy. Those triangular “smiles” look like those face masks used in ancient theatre.
I remember an old Peanuts strip after Sally was born and Charlie Brown was telling Lucy how happy he was and the about the pride he was feeling. And Lucy said something to the effect of, “I know how you feel, Charlie Brown. I would feel that way, too. All we have is this here OLD baby!” (As Linus and blanket walk by).
Yeah. Oddly enough, all those normal bodily functions are a good sign of health for infants, rudness for adolescence, humor for adults and problems for the elderly. People are complicated.
Those crusty old crones will eventually depend on young people to change their diapers, help them in and out of bed and push them in their wheelchairs to the dining room.
The reverse of this is a Monty Python sketch where John Cleese’s “mother” and her friend are fussing over him as if he’s still a baby (“Oh, isn’t he clever! And only 360 months old!” and so on).

It seems that the first baby is not nearly as “cute” as the newest baby.

Michael’s feeling the need for some attention. Negative attention is still attention.

Is it just me, or does Elly have an extra finger in the last panel?

One of mine thought salt was sugar. They do their best without us.

Braaak from Michael preferable to his needing a diaper change though.

it’s not cute when you make doo-doo in pants anymore either
Ukko wilko over 4 years ago
If you’re too old to get away with filling your pants, you’re too old for your burps to be cute.

The middle baby always loses in the end.

I would tease my teenagers that it was a good thing you guys were cute babies. Actually, they grew up to be great people. :-)

Michael is still thinking simplistically. What is funny with the newborn is terrible for a young adult.

Its okay for April to do those things because its cute but one is older it is not cute.
