Just a reminder that Facebook isn’t the only bubble out there. All social media (including diverse sites like Reddit) and most “news” sources have the same issue of being feedback loops. Rule of thumb: if you get all or most of your info from one place, you’re probably not getting the full picture.
My grandfathers (father’s father, mother’s mother, and stepmother’s father) are all long gone. The last death I heard was that of an aunt (wife of mother’s eldest brother) which was last Monday.
Frankly, there are some newspapers that aren’t any more reliable as news sources than facebook. If you take the information that’s handed to you, chances are that it’s part of someone’s agenda. Any more these days, if you want the truth, you have to hunt it down yourself.
Years ago I decided that the best way to get balanced news coverage was to read the two newspapers, or watch the two TV channels, that were always at each other’s throats and calling each other political mouthpieces. Then take the arithmetic mean of their editorial positions. Voila: unbiased news!
I get free image access to the Seattle Times through the Seattle Public Library. Since Coronavirus, I have been reading it cover to cover, trying to skim past the boring articles. It takes me four hours to read a daily edition, and upwards of seven to eight hours to read a Sunday. This is in addition to the two hours it takes to read online comics and their comments. Goat subscribes to three newspapers? I want to crawl under the bed and hide.
And that Putin currently is rolling up his sleeves for our upcoming election, knowing, as an X-Commie that it’s necessary to spread a lie till friends tell it to friends and eventually believe it.
… grandparents are apparently expendable, oh wait, kids too who are sick, oh wait, minorities too, oh wait..poor people .oh wait..people with co-morbid conditions..oh wait..people who are not Christian..oh wait..people who are not white..and the slippery slope continues.. Shades of 1930’s eugenics..
Much of what comes through that social networking site is from the newspapers, so there’s not a whole lot of difference. A few online newspapers or news aggregators, supplemented/spiced by your favorite partisan/ideological screeds will satisfy on a daily basis….

I don’t do Facebook…but I’ve been a bit suspicious of my toaster’s agenda recently. It certainly wasn’t built to do a good job of toasting.

People who do not read the news are uninformed. Those who do are misinformed.
