I caught a seagull that way once. It looked at me with an expression very much like what is drawn in today’s B.C. (I was in Alaska fishing for King Crab). The gull was kinda jogging (flying) in place and I simply walked up behind it and grabbed).
OK, if your interested… it ended up as crab bait and it was super attractive to the crabs. The pot (trap) was loaded when we returned to empty it. When I remember this I feel sadness, guilt and a kind of perverse pride too. Catching a bird in mid-flight was exciting. My co-workers were excited because they knew it would be good bait… (note: It was 1975, hoping that there is a statute of limitations on my egregious behavior). From now on “catch and release” only but so far the birds are staying far enough away, and safely out of my grasp.
Best thing I ever saw happen to a Laughing Gull was getting a little to close to a feeding frenzy of Bluefish at Popham Beach, Maine ! Just a red stain on the water!!
It’s an interesting coincidence to me that they’d have a comic that begins with the line “The Gift of Flight” today of all days. EAA Airventure Week in Oshkosh (largest airshow of its kind in the world) was supposed to be happening this week.
Well, who knew she was a Kung Fu master. I suspect bird will be a little late for his appointment with turtle. It seems that boredom can get us into the worst trouble.
You all probably know this already, but I learned only a few years ago that “seagull” is just a colloquialism for “gull”, the correct name for the bird.

There are too many seagulls in some areas. I don’t see any problem with them being used as crab bait once in awhile.
