Llewellenbruce, cocaine will numb your lips, gums, tongue, or probably any soft membrane you touch it to.

Cocaine was at one time used as a local anesthetic, before the invention of Novocaine.

It’s still used for anesthetic. Or at least it was in the 1980s: When I was a child, I had to get an injection right in my nostril, to help me with my allergies.

Before sticking the needle in, the doctor used cotton soaked in liquid cocaine to numb my nostrils. I must say I was one VERY talkative kid when I left his appointment.

You’re absolutely correct, Morrow. When they were planning that overpass through Sunny Dell Acres, the Plentys were offered a good settlement, but B. O. refused to sell, so they built the overpass right over the house. Chester Gould introduced this and even Max Collins played with the idea. I’d have to do some research to see when this happened, unless there are more knowledgeable fans out there who could add some information.

In WWII the French resistance group the Maquis would mix cocaine with dried blood and spred it on trails. The Nazi K-9 troops searching for them would get a nose full of cocaine laced dried blood when tracking, and were useless for the rest of the day!!!

Probably Mike Curtis can address this. There’s a TV/movie cliche where cops test an unknown powder by tasting it as Gertie does here. She has a good reason to make that mistake. But have any real-life cops been dumb enough to do that? And for a weekday Crimestoppers spot, what should the rest of us do if we find a suspicious substance?

Sure, cocaine was used as a medication pretty freely until the addicitve qualities showed up.

I believe it was prescribed by doctors in the late 19th century to help opium addicts quit. You might say it had mixed results.

When I had surgery in the nasal passage between my eyes about 10 years ago, I was given a small amount to shrink the tissue way up there.

Actually I asked my local police liasions for information on touching your tongue to cocaine as often seen on cop shows and such, as well as what would happen if you made biscuits with it.

Bonnie Braids and Joseph Flintheart Tracy will returne eventually, part of the reason for their delays has been ascertaining their exact ages as various versions have been shown of each character.

Joe and I decided that Bonnie’s in her early 20’s and Joe should be around 6, as both Bonnie and Honeymoon were in the story where Joseph was born, and we estimate Honeymoon at around 12 when she returns.

Night-Gaunt - it is the coca-leaf that has the healthy dose of cocaine, and if you are out of the US, try coca tea. The gringo refines it into a poison, then destroys the crops of coca farmers who have made a living growing coca for centuries, and are not the ones refining it into cocaine.

Plus, destroying their crops just raises the price of cocaine - which effectively recruits even more drug dealers! Same stupid mistake as in the 1929 crash - farmers were going out of business because crop prices dropped drastically as a result of the suddenly shrinking money supply, but they had fixed price mortgages. This caused a food shortage. So our oh so wise government started destroying what little food remained in a futile effort to raise crop prices - causing widespread famine. (That would have been the time to print up some money and pass it around equally.)
