Boopsie: Well, Mrs. Davis was very understanding... she agreed it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Sam and gave it her blessing. It is incredible, isn't it? A child of ours invited to a royal wedding! Man: Sir, where did you get this invitation? Zonker: I made it - mine never arrived.

I thought this week would deal with Duke’s uninvited guest/
Speaking of uninvited guests, maybe Zzzhr was invited to the royals’ wedding.
Incidentally, did you know that Kate, William’s bride, as a descendant of John of Guant, is William’s 19th cousin?

I’ll take down my 8 x 10 of the Royals when you take down that dusty one of the only Irish Catholic President. You have another minority President picture too?

Lewreader regrets the late unpleasantness of 1776, let alone the unfortunate loss of most of Ireland in 1922.
Interestingly, the United States has never had a Protestant English majority. They have always been a dominant minority, however, which went to great pains to pretend they were the whole show. Throw in the Irish, Scots, and the Germans, and you can show a NW European majority for some of American history, but through much of that time, the English did not want the Irish, Scots, and Germans thrown in with them. But even all British and German together doesn’t make a majority anymore. Now you have to add the eastern and southern Europeans in order create a white majority. A century ago, however, Italian and Russian immigrants were not really considered ‘white’. Very soon, people of purely European descent (i.e. ‘white’) will no longer be a majority, but calling ‘white’ an ethniciity is bogus anyway, lumping together Spaniards and Finns, Greeks and Gaels.
There is no majority ethnicity in this country, and never has been. We are all members of ‘minorities’. The question has always been, is one a member of the dominant minority, or a subordinate minority?
Even setting aside ethnicity, and pretending it doesn’t matter, who can doubt that the male minority largely dominates this country today, rather than the female majority?
Who can doubt that the wealthy minority largely dominates the middle class to poor majority?
So I am tired of talk about minorities. The wise have moved on.
This is the 21st century. We now have a black President and a Roman Catholic majority on the Supreme Court. In fact, there are NO protestants on the Supreme court today, 6 are RC and 3 are Jewish. The revered Founding Fathers would be astounded (to use no harsher word) by these facts.
But to get back to Lewreader’s passing remark: All presidents have been minority presidents if you are speaking ethnically. Some have come from groups more-or-less disadvantaged or privileged. But the only truly minority presidents, are those like Bush in his first term who received a minority of the votes cast.
And the ‘royal wedding’? I don’t know why anyone bothers outside of celebrity gossip magazines. And considering the financial situation of the British government right now, the patriotic thing for them to do in this time of austerity would be to get married quietly in a registry office rather than burden the British taxpayers. (I know, the royals are some of the richest people in the world in their own right, but are they really footing the bill for EVERYTHING in this wedding? Security, for example?)
I know this comment, like Lewreader’s, has almost nothing to do with the cartoon. For that I apologize. Just making conversation, I guess.

bleeep, I was long-winded above. Sorry about all the hot air.

I once saw this royal event hosted on BBC, I believe. It was so orchestrated and fake. They were herding the “guests” like cattle. A few got to “meet” the queen.

At once Zonker is guileless AND an idiot.
Dragoncat over 13 years ago
Goodness! I simply cannot imagine why Lord Zonker’s invitation was not sent…
I hope he realizes that when Sam has to explain this to her teacher, she will be the laughing stock of the entire school.
Let us pray…

@Arye…this storyline pretty much HAS to run this week…by next week the wedding will be old news. If it isn’t already….

Last week’s story was redundant after, say, Thursday. Donald Trump is a mendacious idiot. Sarah Palin will do anything for fame & money. The birth certificate issue is believeable only for those who can’t comprehend that the earth is round, which, unfortunately, includes a great many Teapublicans.
This week’s story might be more entertaining, but I can’t wait for the United Kingdom to cut loose the royal family.

None of you guys have noticed that as soon as Sam is out of the house, Boopsie’s strap is slipping. Hmmm. BD isn’t noticing either, yet.
Can it be that I’m looking at a male-dominated forum and you’re more interested in royal gossip than pheromones? What a hoot!

Doughfoot,
I’m a human being, doesn’t that make me a member of the majority?
And, aren’t we all in that majority?
Think about it.
alan.gurka over 13 years ago
yuggib, I don’t understand your logic. If human beings are in the majority, then who’s in the minority? The animals? Insects? I think not.
yuggib over 13 years ago
Tigger,
The reason anyone gives a Rat Hairy behind (and I am with you in not caring, BTW) is because US citizens have been, and continue to be, obsessed with something we did away with at the start of the Revolutionary War; Royalty. Hence, Kentucky Colonels, and Cherokee Princesses (and a few other tribes that come to mind.
I remain your faithless servant, Richard the LVIII, Rex Majestum.

The Queen’s firm has been stable a lot longer than Donald’s & is thus a little more worthy of notice, not much. What? You thought government was ever more than a business arrangement? Do business with them as little as possible, like any mafia. Once in a while they help someone in trouble. Happy fairy tales.

yuggib: we still have an aristocracy in this country. Their titles are things like CEO, Chairman, Director, and so forth…

The event will take place in the middle of the night here in the Pacific time zone. Easy to miss, though it is odd to turn on the TV at that time and see them broadcast a live event.
