Did you know that in the 19th century there was this Frenchman who set about restoring French gothic cathedrals built centuries before? (I wish I remembered his name.) Some of them were in dire need of restoration, but there was a catch. He restored them all according to a uniform model of what his books said a gothic cathedral was supposed to look like. Unfortunately, the actual cathedrals often had more variety in their designs, with lots of interesting quirks that the restorer removed.I guess gothic architecture IS boring…
Pig, you got to stop eavesdropping on conversations about members of Congress flying (aka flying buttocks) from their home to Washington, DC, and all of the vacation resorts on the taxpayer dime.
That someone Pig was talking to was probably telling him about the Airlander 10 airship, commonly called the “flying bum” due to its buttocks shaped aft.
When Diana Rigg did one of the first “legitimate theater” nude scenes, a critic complained that she was "built like a brick mausoleum with insufficient flying buttresses,” apparently not being satisfied with her breast size.
To Stephen Pastis: are you ever fascinated by the conversations generated by your comic in the comments section? I mean they go all over the place and seem to stray far from the subject and/or joke of the strip.Or is it more satisfying to realize just how popular your work is?They baffle me!
Flying buttresses, essentially external bracing beams, were necessary to hold up large open structures like cathedrals because the materials of the day could not support heavy roofs any other way. Boring but true. Also, worked fine for hundreds of years.
These works of “Monumental Stone Architecture” were necessary for a large part because Europeans had burned up too much building material. An early human caused eco-disaster.

I like Pig’s interpretation better than Goat’s. Flying buttresses, the name just stimulates the imagination. I wish I could draw.
