I’m just wondering, how often do people use the term “slushball” outside of Calvin and Hobbes?

That’s what makes being good impressive to Santa (and everyone else). Everyone knows you don’t want to be good and you do it anyway!

How strong is Calvin’s belief in Santa Claus compared to his belief in Hobbes? Santa never appears to him but Hobbes is always there.

Calvin’s comment at the end reminds me of a quote in an essay by one of Hobbes’s favourite authors George Orwell.

In “The Art of Donald McGill”, Orwell comments on the mild bad behaviour of characters in McGill’s saucy comedy postcards which include drunkenness and flirting outside marriage. They also hint at sex before marriage but they seldom refer to adultery.

Orwell commented “Human beings want to be good but not that good and not all the time.”

The reason I consider George Orwell to be one of Hobbes’s favourite authors is that one of his comments to Calvin has been “Who would have thought Big Brother would go commercial.”

That quote can be considered both Orwellian and Hobbesian.

Well played by Hobbes. Does Santa bring Hobbes anything? Hobbes could have ulterior motives here.
