The sad part is it didn’t need to be this way, only they chose to save the $ and not maintain or upgrade their generating equipment and delivery systems. But don’t worry, they will elect those same criminals again.
A WELL REGULATED ENERGY SYSTEM does not exist in Texas. They tout their lack of regulation to bring in manufacturing facilities but now part of the cost is demonstrated.
“There are things that can be done, but it will cost some money,” he added. “About every decade we have these long-sustained periods. And then, you know weatherization is supposed to happen, and then, it doesn’t because it costs money.” – https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/texas/dallas-texas-electrical-power-outage-ercot-failures/287-50797307-0afe-43eb-8175-b78e7e4fc13a
Next time some Texans start talking about secession, remind them of this cold snap because secession from the national grid is exactly what they did in 1930s something. We can see how that worked out for them. To avoid the sin of socialism, their utilities are self-governing. A euphemism for “defer maintenance and make as much money as you can plan.”
Just saw (on CNN) the Texas governor is saying this is the problem with the green new deal, on Fox. . . Guess I gotta start watching that network to get the real truth.
Greed and anti-science led to the demise of the energy grid infrastructure in Texas. Unwillingness (not inability) to winterize critical equipment for harsh weather and constantly evolving climate conditions is the cause of this.
As a New Mexican, I find the plight of Texans both enlightening and wildly amusing – they’ve allowed republicanism to basically destroy their state (we’ve always been a part of a multi-state power grid – it keeps us “powered” and allows us to complain about Arizona and other states at the same time. Win – Win.
The slogan along Texas highways, “Don’t Mess with Texas” is cute, but they’ve failed to notice that their screwed-up politics has done a bang-up job of exactly that.
I remember an old “Snuffy Smith” cartoon where his wife was trying to get him to patch the leaking roof. He explained to her that he couldn’t repair the roof when it was raining because he’d get wet – and when it WASN’T raining, the roof wasn’t leaking! Obviously, Snuffy hailed from Texas because that’s EXACTLY the republican “logic” they’ve use to explain why they’ve not fixed their power grid before! Because this whole scenario has played out many times before in much the same way! FEMA has bailed them out before in similar circumstances, are doing so now, and will in the future.
It’s just another case of, “Move along, people, nothing to see here – just Texans being stupid- move along.”
From the musical “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” my favorite scene was the Governor singing “The Sidestep” (Do a little sidestep) and he still sings it.
Remember what the lying, insulting, republican texan hypocrites said when California had power outages last summer?
Lt Gov Patrick said, “This is what happens when the democrats are left in charge.”
Sen Cruz said, “California is now unable to provide the basic functions, like providing electricity.”
AG Paxton said, “California’s politicians did this, not the heat.”
And so, Texas is freezing because republicans are in charge, Texas is unable to provide electricity because Texas politicians refused to winterize the equipment and most likely stole the money for it.
Perhaps with a bit more listening and constructive compromise which would permit the systems to advance in more ways beyond the standards of over a half century ago the power outages could have been avoided.
This video is downright INSPIRING. It is by a Conservative who strongly supports the Constitution. He is a power figure in Arkansas and as such, as well as from being a war hero, he also has national standing. His statement takes nine minutes but is very worth hearing since he gets to the most essential points and he describes a way forward which can certainly happen elsewhere, including here.

Hey, depending on the issue I vary (liberal for social issues that increase fair opportunities like civil rights, strong education, retraining for jobs, equal work advancement; old style conservative pre-debt-approach for most fiscal issues except that I strong think that infrastructure repair and replacement programs as a modern New Deal approach could help the nation greatly now and should be done; moderate in most else). Oh, and i am an independent who votes according to things like past voting records of candidates. I do not line vote and consider it lazy.

Who’d have thought that state could produce so much blathering, hypocritical misinformation in support of fossil fuels???
(btw, Tucker C. – it’s 7%, not 25%…if it were up to 25%, just think how many more Texans might currently have heat & power)
